UMaine Augusta Quads Tournament Report

Eight players filled out two quads at the UMaine Augusta Chess Tournament played on November 19th, 2011 on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta. Barry Magda and Joshua Quint tied for first in Quad 1 and Kathy Richards took the top spot in Quad 2.

Matthew Fishbein: Maine's Newest Chess Expert!

Scoring 2.0 points in the very strong open section of the Pillsbury Memorial Tournament played on December 3rd, 2011 in Leominster, Massachusetts, Matthew Fishbein acheived a USCF expert-level rating of 2013. Mainers at the Boston University Open

Eight Maine players competed in the Boston University Open played on November 5th, 2011 in the Geroge Sherman Union at the Universtiy's Charles River Campus. Cape Elizabeth High School studnent, Ethan DiNinno, topped the U1900 section with a perfect score of 4.0 points in four games.

Orono Championship Tournament Report

December 4, 2011

Former John Bapst Memorial High School Student and current University of Maine sophomore Aaron Spencer posted a perfect 4.0 points in four games to take first place in the open section of the Orono Champiosnhip on Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 at Orono High School. Spencer plowed through Jaiwei Zou (1374), William Bonney (1575), Kellen McDonald (1409) and Roger Morin (2000) on his way to the top spot. Orono High School sophomore Zach Hamilton won the U1200 section with a clean sweep of the field as well. Here are images, crosstables and a selected game.

Calling All Candidates: The 2012 MECA Elections

Election of the Maine Chess Association Policy Board officers and directors will be held beginning Saturday, December 3, 2011 through Sunday, December 11, 2011. All members who have currently active membership in MECA are eligible to vote and hold office. There are candidates for the officer positions of Treasurer and Secretary, and two candidates for Director positions.

Ninth Presque Isle Open Tournament Report

The Ninth Presque Isle Open was played at the newly-renovated Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library on November 12th, 2011. The two-section nine-player tournament was won by two-time Maine State Champion Roger Morin with 3.0 points. In the Under 1200 section, Matt Norris and Tim Walker tied for first with 3.5 points in four rounds. Here's an illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables and a selected game.

Scholastic State Championship Dates Announced

The Maine Association of Chess Coaches has announced the dates for the Scholastic State Championship Tournaments to take place at the Universtiy of Maine in Orono: Girls Championship February 11, 2012; Team Championship March 3, 2012; Snow Date for Team Championship March 10, 2012; Individual Championship March 17, 2012. More information including registration materials will be posted when available on the ChessMaine.net events page.

Nineteenth Annual Lacy Greenlaw Deer Isle-Stonington Chess-a-thon

It's a one-of-a-kind event that has been taking place for the past nineteen years. It's an overnight of chess--in all its forms--to raise money for scholastic chess players and their teams. It's the Nineteenth Annual Lacy Greenlaw Deer Isle-Stonington Chess-a-thon and it took place on November 10th-11th at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School.
