Creative Arts Tournament Report

"A wonderful little tournament" is how one player described the eight-player Creative Arts Tournament played on October 8th, 2011 in Brewer, Maine. Steve Abrahams topped the crosstable with a perfect 4.0 points in as many rounds. Roger Morin took second with 3.0 points. Here are photos and the USCF crosstable of the event.

Roger Morin Wins 2011 Maine Chess Player of the Year Competition

In a race that came down to the final tournament Roger Morin outlasted Lance Beloungie to take first place in the 2011 Maine Chess Player of the Year Competition. National Chess Day 2011 Tournament Report

October 19, 2011

Fourteen players gathered at Bowdoin College on October 8, 2011 to participate in the Bowdoin National Chess Day Tournament. Ruben Babayan and Phil Lowell tied for first with 3.0 points in the Open section. In the U1600 section, Will Bonney took first with 4.0 points and the only perfect score of the day.

Eastern Maine Open: Quint Wins, Morin Clinches Player of the Year

Joshua Quint won the Eastern Maine Open played on October 1st, 2011 at the University of Maine in Orono with a score of 3.5 points in four rounds. At the same event Roger Morin, who put up 2.5, chinched the Maine Chess Association's Chess Player of the Year title. J. Paul Ciarrocchi won the U1400 section of the event with a perfect 4.0 points in four rounds. Here's an illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstable.

New Hampshire Defeats Maine in Border Battle

October 5, 2011

Maine took on New Hampshire in 2nd Annual Border Battle on September 10, 2011 at the Portsmouth Public Library in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It was a tough match for the Mainers as they were out-rated on eight of ten boards. Great credit goes to David Oshana on first board for his second round victory over International Master Joseph Fang. Adam Schaff also had a nice win over Robert Cousins rated 2185. The final score was Maine 6, New Hampshire 14.

In Memoriam: Bob Solinger

Robert Anthony Solinger passed away on Friday, September 23, in Greenport, N.Y., at the age of 58, from lung cancer. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family. Bob fought courageously but gracefully, never losing his wonderful sense of humor or appreciation for even the smallest miracles life brought.

Chess Club Mystery Patron Changes Rules

This article, describing an anonymous donation to the Belfast Chess Club and and a puzzling proviso, appeared on the waldo.villagesoup.com news page recently. It seems a donor offered the club $2,500 with one requirement: the club can no longer meet at the Belfast Free Library.

Maine-NH Border Battle Match-Ups Finalized

The Second Annual Maine-New Hampshire Border Battle will take place on September 10th at the Portsmouth Public Library in Portsmouth, NH. Ten of Maine's top players will faceoff against New Hampshire's top ten in a match organized and directed by Husson University student Steve Abrahams. Here are the final head-to-head pairings for the match.

Spring Quad at UMaine Augusta

Barry Magda won the four-player, Spring Quad at the University of Maine in Augusta played on May 7th, 2011. Rob Shore put up two points, his only loss being to the winner and Ian Youth and Steve Kaluzynski rounded out the quad. Here are images and a USCF crosstable of the event.
