Roger Morin Wins Downeast Open

A strong field turned out for the New England Friendly Downeast Open played at Southern Maine Community College on July 9-10, 2011. Roger Morin captured first in the open section with 3.5 points in four rounds. Nick Parsons put up 3.5 points himself to take first in the U1650 section. IM David Vigorito Lecture and Simul in South Portland

International Master and author David Vigorito gave a chess lecture and simultaneous chess exhibition at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland on July 9, 2011. He lectured on one of his recent games in the King's Indian and then played fourteen simultaneous games of which he won twelve and drew two. The two drawn games were played by Matthew Fishbein and Dan DeLuca.

Four Tie at Fifth Annual ChessMaine.net Championship

The Fifth Annual ChessMaine.net Championship was contested at Colby College in Waterville on June 19th, 2011. Twenty-four players competed in the two section, G/75 event. A four-way tie for first in the Open section resulted between Alan Schalk, Roger Morin, John Gaspar and Philip Lowell each scoring 3.0 points in four rounds. Lee Doucette took first in the U1550 section and Dennis Lemieux and Isaiah Fallon were the top scoring players rated under 1250.

IM David Vigorito Lecture and Simul is Confirmed

International Master and author, David Vigorito (USCF 2548), will give a lecture and simul at the Southern Maine Community College Campus Center at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9th, 2011. The cost is $15 for either the lecture or simul or $25 for both. In addition, IM Vigorito will have copies of his books available for signing including his just-released Attacking Chess: The King's Indian (Volumes 1 and 2). Roger Peterson Wins First Houlton Invitational Tournament

On May 28th, 2011, eight players gathered in Houlton, Maine to participate in the First Houlton Invitational Tournament open to players rated over USCF 1600. Roger Peterson of Calais won the event with 3.5 points in four games. Here's the tournament report with USCF crosstable.

The 5th Annual ChessMaine.net Championship will take place this Sunday, June 19th at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. Proposed IM David Vigorito Lecture/Simul

ChessMaine.net along with the Maine Chess Association and the Portland Chess Club is planning an evening with International Master David Vigorito and we need your help. IM Vigorito is tentatively scheduled to give a lecture and simul at the Downeast Open at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9th at Southern Maine Community College in Sourh Portland. Portland Quick Chess Marathon

On May 14, 2011 twelve players gathered in South Portland to compete in the Portland Quick Chess Marathon. The event was a ten round, G/15 tournament in two sections (Open and U1500). Steve Abrahams took first in the Open section with 7.0 points and Brett Parker scored 8.0 points to take first in the U1500 section.

In Memoriam: Bernard "Doc" Mann
