Caruana Leads as Candidates Enters Final Round

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday, Caruana and Karjakin were tied at the top of the Candidates crosstable with 7.0 points apiece. The talk on the street after Round 12 was of deja vu all over again as we had the same scenario at the conclusion of the 2016 Candidates--namely, Caruana and Karjakin tied with Karjakin having the better tiebreaks. Round 13 saw Caruana crush Aronian and Karjakin make a draw with So. That gave Fabi a half-point lead going into the final round. 2018 State Scholastic Individuals Tournament Report

One hundred thirteen scholastic players competed in the Maine State Scholastic Individual Championships at the University of Maine in Orono on Saturday, March 24th. The tournament was played in five scholastic sections (K-3, K-6, K-8, High School, and High School U1200) and a companion Open section (the Sidekicks). The Candidates Tournament Approaching the Halfway Mark

Eight of the world's strongest chess players are in Berlin, Germany competing in the double round-robin Candidates Tournament from March 10-28, 2018. The winner of this tournament will earn the right to face Magnus Carlsen in a match for the World Championship to be played in London in November of 2018. After six of fourteen rounds, Fabiano Caruana and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov lead the field with 4.0 points.

US Chess 2018 Scholar-Chessplayer Awards

US Chess is offering five $1,500 awards to high school juniors and seniors as part of their 2018 Scholar-Chessplayer awards. Are you a high school junior or senior who has: played in 25 or more rated games in 2017, shown outstanding achievement in academics and chess, completed one year of chess-related community service since 9th grade, and can write a 500-word essay describing how being selected for this award will enable you to further your education, chess, and community service?

The Maine Chess Pentathlon-a Nonfiction Essay

Bapst Impromptu Swiss #9 Tournament Report

The 9th Bapst Impromptu Swiss tournament was held on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. These unique three-round Swisses with free entry fee are played on weeknight evenings in Bangor with a time control of G/25 d5. BIS #9 attracted 12 players and when the dust had cleared, Holbrook School 8th grader Benjamin Mock found himself at the top of the crosstable with a perfect 3.0 points.

2018 State Scholastic Chess Team Championships Report

On March 10th, a whopping 375 scholastic chess players converged on the University of Maine Orono from all corners of the state to compete in the 2018 State Scholastic Chess Team Championships. US Amateur Team East/World Amateur Team Report

March 4, 2018

On February 17-19, Matthew Fishbein was one of two Mainers to play in the US Amateur Team East/World Amateur Team tournament played in Parsippany, New Jersey. This 48th year of the hugely popular tournament, otherwise known as "The Team," had record attendance, with 326 teams and 1,377 total players from 28 states and several foreign countries. This is the largest non-scholastic tournament in the U.S., based on number of participants. Dan Fishbein has submitted this report.

BAHSSCL Meet #2 Report

The second Bangor Area High School Scholastic Chess League meet of the season took place on Friday, March 2, 2018 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. The three schools competing were: Bangor High School, Hermon High School, and John Bapst. Bill Hartt, Wyatt Hendrix, and Catherine Rudnicki each won both of their games to top the crosstable.

All Saints Winter Warm-Up Tournament Report

A long-time fixture on the Maine scholastic chess scene, the All Saints Winter Warm-Up, organized and directed by Steve Wong, has traditionally attracted large numbers of scholastic (and non-scholastic) players hoping to hone their skills before the State Scholastic Team Chess Championships. This year's Winter Warm-Up attracted sixty players in three US Chess rated sections: Open, K-8, and K-6.
