2018 State Scholastic Chess Team Championships Report

On March 10th, a whopping 375 scholastic chess players converged on the University of Maine Orono from all corners of the state to compete in the 2018 State Scholastic Chess Team Championships. US Amateur Team East/World Amateur Team Report

March 4, 2018

On February 17-19, Matthew Fishbein was one of two Mainers to play in the US Amateur Team East/World Amateur Team tournament played in Parsippany, New Jersey. This 48th year of the hugely popular tournament, otherwise known as "The Team," had record attendance, with 326 teams and 1,377 total players from 28 states and several foreign countries. This is the largest non-scholastic tournament in the U.S., based on number of participants. Dan Fishbein has submitted this report.

BAHSSCL Meet #2 Report

March 3, 2018

The second Bangor Area High School Scholastic Chess League meet of the season took place on Friday, March 2, 2018 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. The three schools competing were: Bangor High School, Hermon High School, and John Bapst. Bill Hartt, Wyatt Hendrix, and Catherine Rudnicki each won both of their games to top the crosstable.

All Saints Winter Warm-Up Tournament Report

A long-time fixture on the Maine scholastic chess scene, the All Saints Winter Warm-Up, organized and directed by Steve Wong, has traditionally attracted large numbers of scholastic (and non-scholastic) players hoping to hone their skills before the State Scholastic Team Chess Championships. This year's Winter Warm-Up attracted sixty players in three US Chess rated sections: Open, K-8, and K-6.

Fishbein to Give 30-Board Simul at Bonny Eagle Middle School

National Master and Cape Elizabeth resident Matthew Fishbein is scheduled to give a 30-board Simultaneous Chess Exhibition at Bonny Eagle Middle School in Buxton, Maine on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. The cost to enter is $5 per player and spectators are free. Pre-registration is available.

Lincolnville Central School K-12 Tournament Report

Bapst Impromptu Double Header Tournament Report

Quasi-Quick Quads Tournament Report

February 22, 2018

The return of the Quasi-Quick Quads saw eighteen players competing in three quads and a six-player round robin. Winners were Alan Schalk, Nathan Dunn, John Brady, and Shrikrishna Parab. Ohio player Michael Abron participated in this event as part of his quest to play a US Chess rated tournament in each of the fifty states. Here's the illustrated tournament report.

From Saturday to Saturday: Six Rated Tournaments in Maine!

As far as we know, there has never been a higher frequency of rated chess tournaments offered in a one-week period in Maine than there is right now. We count six US Chess rated tournaments being offered between the dates Saturday, February 17 - Saturday, February 24, 2018. Our gratitude and appreciation goes out to the organizers and directors of these tournaments and to our intrepid chess players themselves for turning out and putting themselves on the line.

Fort O'Brien Tournment Report

The 2nd Annual Fort O'Brien Chess Tournament was played on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Fort O'Brien School in Machiasport, Maine and attracted seventeen players.
