The Together Place in Bangor Seeking Chess Instructor

The Together Place, an 11-unit housing co-operative in Bangor run by and for low-income adult mental health consumers, is looking for a volunteer chess instructor. The mission of Together Place is to reintegrate mental health consumers into the community and to mainstream activities and their Executive Director believes that chess may play an important role in that mission.

Candidates Round 12 Game: Caruana-Aronian Annotated by Wyatt Hendrix

This game came on the heels of Caruana's eleventh-round loss to Karjakin. It was one of the most pivotal games of the tournament and a crucial victory that propelled Caruana towards the Challenger title.

Caruana to Challenge Magnus Carlsen for World Title

Fabiano Caruana won the Candidates tournament in Berlin in dramatic fashion. He finished a clear point ahead of the pack with the plus-four score of 9.0 points, scored back-to-back victories in the final two rounds, and avoided the need for tiebreak calculations. Caruana will face World Champion Magnus Carlsen in London in November of 2018 in a match for the world title. Congratulations Fabi!

Caruana Leads as Candidates Enters Final Round

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday, Caruana and Karjakin were tied at the top of the Candidates crosstable with 7.0 points apiece. The talk on the street after Round 12 was of deja vu all over again as we had the same scenario at the conclusion of the 2016 Candidates--namely, Caruana and Karjakin tied with Karjakin having the better tiebreaks. Round 13 saw Caruana crush Aronian and Karjakin make a draw with So. That gave Fabi a half-point lead going into the final round. Join us for a mathematical analysis of the possibilities of choosing the next Challenger to Magnus Carlsen.

2018 State Scholastic Individuals Tournament Report

One hundred thirteen scholastic players competed in the Maine State Scholastic Individual Championships at the University of Maine in Orono on Saturday, March 24th. The tournament was played in five scholastic sections (K-3, K-6, K-8, High School, and High School U1200) and a companion Open section (the Sidekicks). The Candidates Tournament Approaching the Halfway Mark

Eight of the world's strongest chess players are in Berlin, Germany competing in the double round-robin Candidates Tournament from March 10-28, 2018. The winner of this tournament will earn the right to face Magnus Carlsen in a match for the World Championship to be played in London in November of 2018. After six of fourteen rounds, Fabiano Caruana and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov lead the field with 4.0 points.

Bapst Impromptu Swiss #9 Tournament Report

The 9th Bapst Impromptu Swiss tournament was held on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. These unique three-round Swisses with free entry fee are played on weeknight evenings in Bangor with a time control of G/25 d5. BIS #9 attracted 12 players and when the dust had cleared, Holbrook School 8th grader Benjamin Mock found himself at the top of the crosstable with a perfect 3.0 points.
