K-8 Chess at Ellsworth Elementary/Middle School

February 12, 2018

Over fifty young chess players from six K-8 schools participated in the third (although the first was canceled due to weather) and final K-8 Chess Afternoon of the season at Ellsworth Elementary/Middle School on Monday, February 12, 2018. These all-play-all, fun events are a great way to introduce new players to tournament-like conditions and also provide more experienced players an opportunity to play against each other in non-rated play.

Panther Scholastic & Open Tournament Report

Grandmother fights gun violence in Chicago, one checkmate at a time

CHICAGO -- One-hundred and eighty-seven people have been shot in Chicago so far this year. Now, a woman touched by gun violence is helping shield kids from danger, taking them from some of the toughest blocks to some of the friendliest squares. Chess in Maine Schools Initiative Update

February 3, 2018

The Chess in Maine Schools (CiMS) Initiative was established to provide eligible schools functional, inexpensive chess equipment, a proven scholastic chess curriculum, and technical support in establishing and maintaining a successful chess program throughout the academic year. There continues to be opportunities for individuals and organizations to support the CiMS Initiative and for Maine schools to benefit from these generous donations.

Spencer Wins Bapst Impromptu Swiss 6

February 3, 2018

The 6th John Bapst Impromptu Swiss tournament played on January 30, 2018 attracted six players in one section. These G/25 +10 tournaments, usually played on weeknights at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor, provide opportunities for players to get in three rated games at a quicker time control compared with a traditional weekend tournament. Former Bapst student Aaron Spencer took first with three wins in three games.

John Bapst Memorial High School to Offer Free, Rated Tournaments

Lincolnville Central School K-8 Tournament Report

Thirty-nine scholastic players came out to compete in the first US Chess rated tournament at the Lincolnville Central School in Lincolnville, Maine. The tournament was played in four sections: Grades 7-8, Grades 4-6, Grades 2-3, and Grades K-1. We would like to thank all the players, parents, coaches, and volunteers for making this premier tournament a great success and a big bow of gratitude to Lincolnville Central School for hosting. Bhutan Travelogue

When the possibility of travelling to the remote Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan presented itself, we jumped at the opportunity. What resulted was an epic three-nation journey that included (among many other wonders) playing chess in the foothills of the Himalayas, paying homage at the final resting place of Mahatma Gandhi, and visiting the oldest, continually running chess club in the world.
