The 6th John Bapst Impromptu Swiss tournament played on January 30, 2018 attracted six players in one section. These G/25 +10 tournaments, usually played on weeknights at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor, provide opportunities for players to get in three rated games at a quicker time control compared with a traditional weekend tournament. Former Bapst student Aaron Spencer took first with three wins in three games. |

Thirty-nine scholastic players came out to compete in the first US Chess rated tournament at the Lincolnville Central School in Lincolnville, Maine. The tournament was played in four sections: Grades 7-8, Grades 4-6, Grades 2-3, and Grades K-1. We would like to thank all the players, parents, coaches, and volunteers for making this premier tournament a great success and a big bow of gratitude to Lincolnville Central School for hosting. When the possibility of travelling to the remote Buddhist Kingdom of Bhutan presented itself, we jumped at the opportunity. What resulted was an epic three-nation journey that included (among many other wonders) playing chess in the foothills of the Himalayas, paying homage at the final resting place of Mahatma Gandhi, and visiting the oldest, continually running chess club in the world. |

The Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament, now in its 13th year, has historically attracted big numbers of chess players to the blueberry-barrened, sleepy hamlet of Aurora, Maine. This year fifty-five competitors turned up to play chess in five sections including a large contingent from Maine Maritime Academy. The UMA Fall tournament has become a well-anticipated event in Maine over the last few years. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of tournament organizers and directors Barry Magda and Brian Roderick, players have this fun, well-run event to look forward to on their chess calendars. This year's edition featured twenty-four players competing in five sections. Section winners were: Quad 1 Jarod Bryan, Quad 2 Dan Robbins, Quad 3 Minh Nguyen, Section 4 Stephen Morse and a four-way tie in Section 5 between Jakob McPhee, Dennis Kallor, Colby Allen, and John Li. |

In celebration of National Chess Day, John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor hosted the Bapst Fall 2017 Chess Tournament on October 28, 2017. In two sections, Open and U800, the tournament attracted 25 players. In the Open section, Roger Morin was perfect on the day with 4.0 points in four games and Joshua Batstone claimed the top spot in the U800 section with 3.5 points. How can you play fourteen rounds of chess in one night? Well the only way, of course, is if those rounds are at a blitz time control! On October 27, 2017 eight intrepid players showed up for an epic, fourteen-round blitz marathon at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. When the dust cleared it was Ben Mock who was left standing alone on top of Mount Olympus with the very impressive score of 12.5 points. Dan Robbins finished second with 11.0 points. |
