On December 7, 2019, forty-seven players converged on Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth for a three section Swiss tournament. Isaac Dinnerstein took first in the Open section, Eric Dinnerstein topped the U1200 section and Dylan Miller-Barrett (3.0), Samuel Coldwell (3.0), and Joshua Barrett tied for first in the U800 section.

Team USA Hockey won gold by beating Canada 7-3 in the last game of the 2019 Winter Deaflympics in Chiavenna, Italy. Immediately following the game, the Closing Ceremony that ended the Deaflympics was held. We bring you our final report from Italy.

The 19th Winter Deaflympics chess tournament has concluded with a three-way tie for first. By the narrowest of margins, Kazakhstan edged out Germany on game point tiebreaks to bring home the gold medal. Germany took silver and Croatia bronze. The women's tournament was won by Ukraine, followed by Russia, and Poland. The American team had some exciting victories in both the Blitz and Standard tournaments but in the end finished well out of medal contention.

In Rounds 4-6 at the 2019 Deaflympics chess competition, Team USA scored one match point in Round 5 with a 4-0 sweep of Brazil.. That doesn't nearly tell the whole story though. In Round 4 v Uzbekistan, a triple-repeat-of-position draw was there for the taking on Board 2 but not claimed and in Round 6 a win was nearly assured on Board 1 when the top board for Bosnia and Herzegovina achieved a position to force another 3x draw which handed the match point to the team Bosnia and Herzegovina. Such is chess.

The Team Chess Competition at the 2019 Winter Deaflympics has begun. Team USA lost a close match with Belarus in Round 1 by the score of 1.5-2.5. Board 2 for the US Team scored first vs Italy in Round 2 but the other three boards unfortunately dropped their points to a well-prepared Italian team. We received a bye in Round 3. Today it's USA vs Uzbekistan in Round 4 of the nine round tournament.

The first chess event at the 2019 Winter Deaflympics was an eleven-round Blitz (3m+3s) tournament with separate sections for men and women. In the Women's section, Yulita Turkeeva of Russia took first place with the impressive undefeated score of 10.0 points (nine wins and two draws). The Men's section was won by GM Yehuda Gruenfeld of Israel with 9.0 points (9 wins and two losses). The American team turned in a strong performance. In a field with two GM's, three IM's, and two FM's, the Americans Oscar Petrov, Abraham Glasser, and Branton Stewart scored 6.0, 4.5, and 4.0 points respectively.

Sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee, the Deaflympics has attracted top deaf athletes from around the world since 1924. As of 2019, chess has been officially adopted as a sport in the Winter Deaflympics. While players arrive and last-minute preparations are being made, we bring you the first of a number of reports from the Italian Alps.

Jarod Bryan won the Open section of the Saco Open with 3.5 points in four rounds. He was trailed by four players just off the lead who put up 3.0 points. Daniel Michaud took first in the U1800 section with 3.5 points as well. Here's the illustrated tournament report with US Chess crosstables.
