The spring scholastic chess season unofficially got underway with the first Ellsworth K-8 Chess Afternoon at the Ellsworth Middle School on Monday, December 12th, 2011. Over one hundred scholastic players from seven schools participated in this annual harbinger of the competitive scholastic chess season.

Seven players competed in the 11th Presque Isle Chess Tournament at the University of Maine, Presque Isle on December 17th, 2011. Roger Morin topped the four-player open section with 3.0 points in three games. In the reserve section, Arthur Ryzak scored two wins and two draws to take first place. Ian Youth, a student at the Breakwater School in Portland, finished second in the elemantary section of the 8th Annual New England Scholastic Chess Championships held on December 10th-11th, 2011 in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. With only one loss in seven rounds Youth, the only Maine player at the event, scored 5.0 points.

Thirty-four players (equaling about 34% of the population of the small hamlet in which this tournament was played) competed in the seventh annual Aurora Winter Solstice Chess Tournament at the Airline Community School in Aurora, Maine on Sunday, December 11th, 2011. Matthew Fishbein and Roger Morin tied for first in the open section, Dan Fishbein was the highest-scoring U1400 player, Cameron Wendell won the U1000 and Max DeLuca Lowell took the top spot in the U600 section.

Eight players filled out two quads at the UMaine Augusta Chess Tournament played on November 19th, 2011 on the campus of the University of Maine at Augusta. Barry Magda and Joshua Quint tied for first in Quad 1 and Kathy Richards took the top spot in Quad 2.

Scoring 2.0 points in the very strong open section of the Pillsbury Memorial Tournament played on December 3rd, 2011 in Leominster, Massachusetts, Matthew Fishbein acheived a USCF expert-level rating of 2013. Eight Maine players competed in the Boston University Open played on November 5th, 2011 in the Geroge Sherman Union at the Universtiy's Charles River Campus. Cape Elizabeth High School studnent, Ethan DiNinno, topped the U1900 section with a perfect score of 4.0 points in four games.

Former John Bapst Memorial High School Student and current University of Maine sophomore Aaron Spencer posted a perfect 4.0 points in four games to take first place in the open section of the Orono Champiosnhip on Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 at Orono High School. Spencer plowed through Jaiwei Zou (1374), William Bonney (1575), Kellen McDonald (1409) and Roger Morin (2000) on his way to the top spot. Orono High School sophomore Zach Hamilton won the U1200 section with a clean sweep of the field as well. Here are images, crosstables and a selected game.
