Thirty-four players participated in the Joe Brown Memorial Tournament held at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School on Saturday, January 28th, 2012. The annual, non-rated, scholastic tournament honors the memory of former Deer Isle-Stonington chess team member Joe Brown. Winners of the four sections were: Bethany Humphrey (7-8), Brendan Penfold (5-6), Rylee Eaton (3-4) and Ruby DeLuca Lowell (K-2).

For thirteen years the MLK Chess Tournament at Stillwater Motessori has been attracting scholastic players and more recently adult competitors to Old Town for a day of mid-winter chess. This year's edition had fifty-six players in four sections: Open, K-12, K-8 and K-6 non-rated. Here's the richly illustrated tournament report with results, crosstables and selected games.

Thirty-three players turned out for the five-section John Bapst New Year's Tournament played at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor on January 8th, 2012. This year's tournament was held in honor of former John Bapst Chess Coach Bob Solinger who passed away last year after a long battle with cancer.

Todd Snyder overwhelmed all of his opponents, including former Maine champion Roger Morin, to score 4.0 points and win the First Houlton Open 2012, the first Maine Chess Association sponsored Maine Chess Player of the Year event of 2012. Morin took second with 3.0 points. The big story was, however, Colby College student Joe Fishman who gained 299 USCF rating points to finish with 2.5 points an a provisional USCF rating of 1781 in this his second rated tournament.
