Joe Brown Memorial Tournament Report

On Saturday, January 29th the Deer Isle-Stonington Chess Boosters sponsored the 5th Annual Joe Brown Memorial Tournament for K-8 chess players. Joe's mother Jenny and his two sisters Whitney and Chelsea were on hand to give out the awards in four divisions: K-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8. Thirty-two young chess players were on hand to honor Joe's memory with some memorable chess matches. Dan DeLuca from Aurora donated his time coming down to Deer Isle to direct the event for the 5th year in a row.

Portsmouth Open Tournament Report

January 27, 2011

Thirteen Maine chess players competed in the thirty-eight player five round Portsmouth Open on January 15-16, 2011. The open section of the event was won by GM Alexander Ivanov with 4.5 points. Matthew Fishbein was the highest scoring Maine player with 3.5 points. His performance rating of 2221 added forty-five points to his quickly-rising USCF Class A rating. Abrahams Wins 12th Annual MLK Day Chess Tournament

Forty-seven players competed in the 12th Annual MLK Day Chess Tournament held at the Stillwater Montessori School in Old Town on Monday, January 17th. Steve Abrahams took first in the open section with 4.0 points, Josh Audibert won the K-12 section (which was merged with the open), Bethany Humphrey went unbeaten and untied in the K-8 section and Dhari Al-Shamari and Catherine Rudnicki shared equal first in the K-6 section with perfect scores. K-8 Chess Afternoon at Ellsworth Middle School

Over one hundred scholastic chess players gathered at Ellsworth Middle School on Thursday, January 13th for nearly two hours of all-play-all open chess at the K-8 Open Chess Day organized and directed by Deer Isle-Stonington chess coach Dick Powell. This is the second of three such gatherings (the next being on February 28th) that provide an opportunity for players to sharpen their games in preparation for the scholastic state championship tournaments held at the University of Maine in Orono in March.

MECA Policy Board Chosen

Voting has been completed for the four Board of Director seats on the Maine Chess Association's Policy Board. The top four vote getters have been elected to serve a one-year term, effective Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2011. The new Policy Board consists of: Steve Abrahams (Bangor), Philip Lowell (Portland), Jon Malev (Scarborough) and Brian Roderick (Chelsea).

John Bapst New Year's Tournament Report

Twenty-eight chess players competed in three sections at the 2011 edition of the John Bapst New Year's Tournament played at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor on Sunday, January 2nd. The tournament is a fundraiser for a possible trip to the high school national championships in the spring. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstable and a very entertaining game played by two former high school rivals.

Augusta Open Tournament Report

Thirteen players participated in two section of the Augusta Open played on December 11th, 2010. Phil Lowell and Curt Brock tied for first in the open section each scoring 3.0 points. Kathy Richards and Brian Roderick took first in the U1600 section also scoring 3.0 points in four games. This tournament hopefully signals the return of tournament chess to the Augusta area.

ChessMaine Interviews: 2010 Maine State Champion Lucas McCain

After three consecutive second-place finishes at the Maine High School Scholastic Championships, Lucas McCain, a former student at Yarmouth High School currently attending Washington University in St. Louis, won the 2010 Maine State Closed Championship played at the University of Maine in Orono on August 21-21, 2010. Lucas gives his perspective on the tournament, on his chess development and on his future goals--chess related and otherwise--in this in-depth interview.

PVC League Meets at Orono High School

The first meeting of the Penobscot Valley Chess League for the 2010-2011 season occurred at Orono High School on December 11th, 2010. Three high school teams were fielded--Bangor, John Bapst and Orono--and players competed in a swiss-style tournament with a time control of game in thirty minutes. This report contains results, images of all participants and three selected games.
