Scholastic Team Championships Tournament Report

The 2011 State Scholastic Chess Team Championships were held Saturday, March 5th, in the Memorial Union at the University of Maine in Orono. Two hundred thirteen players supported by coaches and parents gathered to contest team honors in the K-3, K-6, Junior High, and High School sections. Also at stake were individual achievements leading to invitation to the Individual Championships to be held at the same location on March 19th. Each player competed in four games with honors decided by total team points scored for the four games or, in the case of the High School Championship section, by head-to-head match play. All Saints Winter Warm-Up Tournament Report

March 3, 2011

Forty-two players turned out for the five-section All Saints Winter Warm-Up Touranament played in Bangor on February 26, 2011. Winners were: Steve Abrahams (Open), Collin Calhoun (U1500), Ezra Briggs (K-12), Ian Youth (K-8), Nicholas Kawamura, Michael Hayden and Soozin Cha (K-6), and Rylee Eaton (K-3). This is the last USCF-rated tournament in Maine before the state scholastic team championships on March 5, 2011. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables.

K-8 Open Chess and Steve Abrahams Simul at Ellsworth Middle School

K-8 chess players from eight communities participated in the K-8 Open Chess Day and Steve Abrahams Simultaneous Exhibition at Ellsworth Middle School on Tuesday, March 1, 2011. The event was a precursor to the upcoming state scholastic team championships (the largest chess tournament in the state) to be held at the University of Maine on Saturday, March 5, 2011.

Presque Isle/Houlton February Tournament Report

February 27, 2011

Game in 90 tournaments continue in Aroostook County as part of the Presque Isle/Houlton Tournament Series. Players compete in up to four games over the course of two days in two different Maine cities. Roger Morin won the event with a perfect score of 4.0 points in four games. Tom Taylor and Lance Beloungie tied for second scoring 2.5 points apiece.

Tournaments at the Portland Chess Club

Tournament activity keeps the heat on at the Portland Chess Club. While snow piles up outside, USCF tournament games pile up at the regular Friday evening meetings of the Portland Chess Club. Having completed the PCC Fall Quads the week before Christmas, the PCC has just launched the PCC Winter Swiss.

Bangor Blitz!

It's fast paced. It's fun. It's maddening. It's blitz chess of course. At the Bangor Blitz Championship, held at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor on February 13th, fifteen players each played eighteen games at five minutes a side. Winners in the Open section were Steve Abrahams, Andrew Seavey and Dan DeLuca. Zach Hamilton, Josh Audibert and Haley DeLuca Lowell took first, second and third respectively in the merged U1000 section.

Houlton and Presque Isle Tournament Reports

February 2, 2011

Two events took place in Aroostook County in late January: the 1st U1200 Houlton Open at The Art Studio on Court Street in Houlton on January 22nd and the 2nd Presque Isle/Houlton Open at Turner Memorial Library in Presque Isle on January 29th and The Art Studio in Houlton on January 30th. Andy Chan won the U1200 tournament with a perfect 4.0 points in four rounds and Roger Morin won the four-player PI/Houlton Open with 3.5 points.

Riverton School Chess Club Seeks Volunteers

The Riverton Elementary School in Portland has a scholastic chess club that meets Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The coaches at the club, Jon Malev, Fred Fowler and Frank Smith, are looking for people to get involved teaching chess. Maine Chess Player of the Year Competition for 2011

We are pleased to announce the Maine Chess Player of the Year competition for 2011. Players will receive one point for each game played including any full point byes, players will also receive points from their tournament score (half point byes will not count). In order to be eligible for the Maine Chess Player of the Year competition, a player must be a MECA member. Membership rates are listed in the About MECA link on ChessMaine.net.
