Sixty-three Players Compete at Stillwater Montessori School MLK Tournament

A very strong turnout was on hand for the 14th Annual MLK Chess Day Tournament at the Stillwater Montessori School in Old Town on January 21, 2013. Sixty-three players competed in four sections. The winners were: Roger Morin (Open), Nicholas Kawamura (K-12), Stuart MacKay and Zack Grindal (K-8) and Ben Fitzpatrick (K-6 non-rated). John Bapst New Year's Tournament

Thirty-one players turned out in five sections for Maine's first tournament of the new year at the John Bapst New Year's Tournament played on January 6th, 2013 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. Winners were: Roger Morin (Quad 1), Curt Brock (Quad 2), William Ravn (Quad 3), J. Paul Ciarrocchi and Matthew Spear (U1200) and Vetri Vel (U600).

Fishbein Wins New Hampshire Amateur

January 7, 2013

On October 6, 2012 Matthew Fishbein won the open section of New Hampshire Amateur, played in Manchester, with a perfect score of 4.0 points in four rounds. Winning this tournament came with another milestone for Matthew: his highest USCF rating, a whopping 2125. (Matthew has since increased that rating to high of 2131.) Congratulations Matthew and we look forward to following your chess exploits in 2013!

Jarod Bryan Wins Maine Player of the Year

Congratulations to Jarod Bryan the winner of this year's Maine Chess Player of the Year competition. Bryan was able to clinch the title with one tournament, the Aurora Winter Solstice, still remaining in the schedule. Congratulations to second and third place finishers Lance Beloungie and Aaron Spencer and to all those who competed in this year-long event.

Presque Isle Junior Open #2 Tournament Report

December 21, 2012

Twelve players turned out for the four round Presque Isle Junior Open #2 at the University of Maine Presque Isle on December 15th, 2012. The highest rated player, and by no means a junior, Roger Morin, took first with 4.0 points. Lois Morin and Rick Perry tied for 2nd-3rd with 3.0 points. In Maine's last tournament of 2012, David Hunter (568) scored an upset win over Roger Hardison (USCF1594) to finish with 2.0 points.

Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament Report

December 8, 2012

Thirty-two players competed in the 8th Annual Aurora Winter Solstice chess tournament at the Airline Community School in Aurora on Saturday, December 8th, 2012. Roger Morin topped the open section with a perfect 3.0 points, Andy Vaughn and Matt Spear shared first in the U1400 section with 2.0 points in three rounds, Brendan Penfold went undefeated and untied with 4.0 points in as many games and Rylee Eaton, Ben Penfold and Colyn Rich shared first in the U600 section.

Presque Isle Junior Tournament Report

December 2, 2012

On November 10th, nine players gathered in Presque Isle for a chess tournament in which five of the players were new USCF members. Rudy Hoffert, who played in his first event since the early 1990's, went 4-0 to take first place. Lois Morin and Rick Perry tied for 2nd-3rd with 3.0 points. MACC Announces Scholastic Championship Dates

November 9, 2012

The Maine Association of Chess Coaches has announced the dates for the scholastic state championship tournaments to be played at the University of Maine in Orono. The dates are as follows: Girls: February 9th, Teams: March 9th, Snow Day: March 16th, Individuals: March 23rd.
