8th Annual Joe Brown Memorial Tournament Report
01.27.13 This annual non-rated event is held in honor of former Deer Isle-Stonington student and chess player Joe Brown. This year's tournament, played at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School on January 26, 2013, attracted twenty-six K-8 players who played four rounds of chess at the quick time control of game in 15 minutes. Here's the illustrated tournament report.
This tournament was organized by Dick Powell and directed by Dan DeLuca and Andy Bryan.

Players competed for trophies in five divisions: K-1st grade, 2nd-3rd, 4th, 5th-6th and 7th-8th within three tournament sections: K-3rd grade, 4th-5th grade and 6th-8th grade.
Brendan Penfold was perfect on the day with four wins in four games taking the top spot in the 7-8 division. He was followed by Orly Vaughn and Max DeLuca Lowell who tied for third place with Tyson Rice each scoring 2.0 points. SooZin Cha and Ben Penfold (a fifth grader who was playing up) rounded out the crosstable in this division.
Ben Penfold won the head-to head playoff game to determine the 5th-6th grade winners and received the 1st place trophy. Cameron Stewart, who scored 2.0 points in the 4th grade section, took the second place trophy.
The 4th-5th grade section was the tournament's largest with 12 players. Rylee Eaton went unbeaten and untied to take first place with 4.0 points. Oliver Brown got second with 3.0 points and Wyatt Eaton took 3rd scoring 2.5 points. Also scoring 2.5 points and receiving the 4th place trophy was Myles Brown. Cole Stewart, who tied with Nathan Thompson with 2.0 points, took home the 5th place trophy on tiebreaks. Kaylee Morey finished in 8th place, Dakota Emerick put up 1.0 point and finished in 10th and Drew Wendell and Taylor Hardy split the point for 11th and 12th place respectively.
Henry Penfold took the top spot in the 2nd-3rd grade division with 3.5 points. McHenna Martin and Trace Brophy each scored 2.5 points and received the 2nd and 3rd place trophies. Trailing the leaders in this division were: Macey Brown (2.0), Thomas Thompson (1.5), and Dexter Brown (1.5).
Brayden Martin and Maya Brown, who both played up into the 2nd-3rd grade section, received the first and second place trophies in the K-1 division.
