The Maine Association of Chess Coaches--the organization responsible for planning and directing the largest chess tournament in the state, the state spring scholastics--has announced the date of its fall planning meeting. The meeting will take place on Saturday, October 13th at 1:00 p.m. at the University of Maine Orono in the Memorial Union. MACC asks all those who have an interest in planning this event or in supporting scholastic chess in Maine to please attend. |

Todd Snyder won the eleven-player September Houlton Open with a perfect score of 4.0 points in four rounds. Roger Morin was just off the lead with 3.0 points (his only loss being to Snyder in the third round). In the 2.5 point tier Aaron Spencer and Richard Fontinha tied for 3rd-4th place. Jarod Bryan captured the first place spot at the Downeast Open played at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland on July 21st. Bryan scored 4.0 points in four games. He was trailed by Matthew Fishbein and Mark Bourque with 3.0 points. Here's the tournament report with USCF crosstables and photos from the event. |

Today is the final day of the Denker and Barber Tournaments of State Champions. One more round to decide the outcome. For the Maine representatives, it is a day to hopefully finish strong. |

The Round 4 pairings were posted online late at night. The Cape Elizabeth players awoke to find out who their challenging opponents would be. In the Denker, Brett Parker would face Kentucky champ Taylor (1950). In the Barber, Matthew Fishbein would play Gabe Katz (1922), the Vermont state champ. After breakfast, the participants sat down for their round at Noon. |

Vancouver, Washington, August 5: We started Sunday with an open morning, with the first round of the day not until Noon. That gave us a little time to explore Vancouver, which was eye opening. A walk down Main Street revealed a city that has clearly seen better days. Most of the stores are empty, and those that aren't mostly house pawn shops and second hand stores. There is clearly an effort to revive this city of 150,000, and the Hilton and Convention Center where this week's tournaments are being held is part of that effort. The Hilton is very nice, and the playing halls are first class. However, Vancouver overall is a world away from Portland, just 10 miles to our south. |

Vancouver, Washington, August 4: Today was an unusual day in the Pacific Northwest- it was hot. In an area known for its cool, cloudy weather, having 100% sunshine and a high temperature of 102 is certainly unusual. After a day of sight seeing in Portland, which included a visit to Powell's, the country's largest independent bookstore, it was time to turn to the reason we came here--chess. |

It's been a year since the first Barber Tournament of Middle School State Champions. Matthew Fishbein represented Maine in that inaugural tournament last August in Orlando. The 2011 Barber attracted 46 champions from across the country and lived up to its billing as an important new companion to the Denker Tournament of High School State Champions with which it is held. The co-champions were well known players Justus Williams of New York and Michael Brown of California, who are both now masters. Matthew represented Maine well, winning 4 of 6, and tying for 4th place. It was a great experience, and Matthew is anxious for the chance to represent the Pine Tree State again. |
