Vancouver, Washington, August 4: Today was an unusual day in the Pacific Northwest- it was hot. In an area known for its cool, cloudy weather, having 100% sunshine and a high temperature of 102 is certainly unusual. After a day of sight seeing in Portland, which included a visit to Powell's, the country's largest independent bookstore, it was time to turn to the reason we came here--chess. |

It's been a year since the first Barber Tournament of Middle School State Champions. Matthew Fishbein represented Maine in that inaugural tournament last August in Orlando. The 2011 Barber attracted 46 champions from across the country and lived up to its billing as an important new companion to the Denker Tournament of High School State Champions with which it is held. The co-champions were well known players Justus Williams of New York and Michael Brown of California, who are both now masters. Matthew represented Maine well, winning 4 of 6, and tying for 4th place. It was a great experience, and Matthew is anxious for the chance to represent the Pine Tree State again. |

As it so often goes with these events, the Susan Polgar Girls' Invitational was not decided until the final round. Michelle Chen, with 5.0 points, was paired with the tournament's highest rated player, Alice Dong, who had 4.5 points. Chen, playing the black pieces, equalized out of the opening and was slightly better in the middlegame. Dong, who needed a win to secure first place, pressed. With less than three minutes remaining on her clock, Chen offered her hand in resignation. After a 3 hour 20 minute last round game, Maine player Haley DeLuca Lowell, who was seeded 31st in the field, accepted her opponent's draw offer to finish tied for 13th place with 3.5 points. |

Rounds four and five are in the books at the 2012 Polgar Girls' Invitational here in St. Louis. Michelle Chen, from Massachusetts, is the only player who has won all of her games scoring a perfect 5.0 points. Tomorrow she will be paired with the tournament's highest rated player, Alice Dong, from New Jersey, who has 4.5 points. Maine's player scored two wins today and is now tied for 10th place with 3.0 points. |

Round three has concluded at the Polgar Girls' Invitational. Of the forty-eight participants only four have perfect scores of 3.0: Michelle Chen (MA), Annastasia Wyzywany (LA), Rachel Ulrich (WI) and Zoe Lemon (MO). Tomorrow's games may whittle that number down to a sole leader. The crosstable after three rounds is here. Maine's representative has one point and is tied for 26th place. |

The first round of the Susan Polgar Foundation Ninth Annual Girls' Invitational chess tournament kicked off today with a very beautiful and touching opening ceremony. Webster University president Dr. Elizabeth Stroble welcomed the young women to campus and heaped congratulations on them for their intelligence, their accomplishments and their leadership. |

Day two at the Susan Polgar Foundation Ninth Annual Girls' Invitational chess tournament was filled with many exciting, stimulating and fun activities. The girls were instructed by Paul Truong, an eleven-time national champion, FIDE Master and coach of the 2004 U.S. Women's team at the 36th Chess Olmypiad, played in a simultaneous chess exhibition given by GM Polgar and enjoyed a trip to St. Louis' eclectic City Museum. |

We're in St. Louis, Missouri for the Susan Polgar Foundation Ninth Annual Girls Invitational chess tournament taking place July 22nd-27 on the campus of Webster University. The tournament proper begins on Tuesday, July 24th but in the meantime there will be lots of activities including: training sessions with GM Polgar, blitz, bughouse and problem solving championships, a pool party, a visit to the city museum and much more. |

Roger Morin won the seven-player 2012 Maine Potato Blossom Festival Chess Tournament played outdoors in Fort Fairfield, Maine on July 14th, 2012 with a score of 4.0 points. Todd Snyder and Lance Beloungie finished second and third with scores of 3.0 and 2.0 points respectively. Here are photos and the USCF crosstable of the event. |
