Chess at the Common Ground Country Fair

In an article that appeared in the Maine Organic Farmer and Gardener December 2012 - February 2013, Common Ground Country Fair Director Jim Ahearn wrote, "One of my favorite images from this year's Fair was the sight of kids playing chess in the new Farm & Homestead Kids Activity Area. In the midst of 20,000 people was a chessboard on a table, tucked quietly off the busy thoroughfare, seemingly under the watch of apple trees. Time and again throughout the weekend, a changing cast of young fairgoers sat there in quiet concentration."

ChessMaine.net Editor Selected for USCF Publications Committee

ChessMaine.net Editor, and Maine Chess Association Vice President, Dan DeLuca has been selected to serve on the United States Chess Federation Publications Committee. Ramon Hernandez, current chair of the USCF Publications Committee and former chair of the Chess Journalists of America Awards Committee, chose DeLuca based on his work at ChessMaine.net the award-winning website of the Maine Chess Association.

Houlton Player of the Year Event

January 29, 2013

January 12, 2013 was the date of the new year's first Maine Chess Player of the Year tournament played in Houlton. The event attracted sixteen players in two sections: open and U1200. Roger Morin and Max Berube tied for first in the open section and Stephen Burden was perfect in the U1200 section with 4.0 points in four games.

Presque Isle Player of the Year Tournament

January 27, 2013

The Presque Isle Player of the Year tournament was played on January 26th and attracted seven players ranging in rating from USCF 137 to USCF 2030. Roger Morin took first with 4.0 points, Roger Hardison was close behind with 3.0 points and Brian Hurst, Lois Morin and Rick Perry tied for third with 2.0 points. Following the leaders were Shaina Hamilton and Devin Ivey.

8th Annual Joe Brown Memorial Tournament Report

This annual non-rated event is held in honor of former Deer Isle-Stonington student and chess player Joe Brown. This year's tournament, played at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School on January 26, 2013, attracted twenty-six K-8 players who played four rounds of chess at the quick time control of game in 15 minutes. Roger Morin: Maine's Winningest Player Six Years Running

Congratulations to Roger Morin, Maine's Winningest Player for the last six years (2007-2012). Roger topped the charts with five tournament wins in 2007, eight in 2008, eight in 2009, twelve in 2010, ten in 2011 and twelve in 2012. That's a total of fifty-five Maine tournament wins in six years. A hearty, "well done" to Maine's player to beat!

Sixty-three Players Compete at Stillwater Montessori School MLK Tournament

A very strong turnout was on hand for the 14th Annual MLK Chess Day Tournament at the Stillwater Montessori School in Old Town on January 21, 2013. Sixty-three players competed in four sections. The winners were: Roger Morin (Open), Nicholas Kawamura (K-12), Stuart MacKay and Zack Grindal (K-8) and Ben Fitzpatrick (K-6 non-rated).
