Maine Chess Academy Chessnotes Vol. 1, No. 1

Here's an updated newsletter from our friends at the Maine Chess Academy in Portland. The Academy is making great strides promoting chess in Maine. Two highlights of their activities are meetings with Portland City Counselor Ed Suslovik and Portland Public Schools Superintendent Manny Caulk as well as a planned Chess Festival at the Portland Expo on June 7th.

Blue Hill Chess Team Wins Trophy at Nationals

Atlanta, Georgia. Blue Hill Consolidated School's Chess Team came home victorious at the National Junior High Scholastic Chess Championships held on April 25-27 in Atlanta, Georgia. The first year team took home the 18th place trophy, with 56 teams competing from across the country, in the K-8 Under 750 Division. BHCS recently formed the team in November 2013, and on March 8, 2014, the team became the Maine State Scholastic Chess Champions in the K-6 Championship Division.

Jarod Bryan Wins Sixth Maine Championship

Jarod Bryan won his sixth Maine Chess Championship this weekend at the Best Western Plus Grand Hotel in Waterville. Clear second was taken by Joseph Powell a Medomak High School freshman who turned in a stunning performance to post 4.0 points. His only loss was to the tournament's highest rated player Matthew Fishbein who shared third with Max Berube and John Brady. Blitz Chess Brunch Benefit in Blue Hill

On Sunday, April 6, the Blue Hill Consolidated School's chess team had a successful Blitz Chess Brunch Fundraiser. The Black Anchor Restaurant donated 60% of the proceeds to the team. The K-6 Maine State Championship team is raising money to attend the National Junior High Chess Championship in Atlanta later this month. There were about 100 people in attendance. Blue Hill students challenged the public to games of Blitz chess, and student musicians played their instruments for entertainment throughout the day. The team hopes to make this an annual event. The chess team thanks everyone who participated in this successful fundraiser!

Freeport Open Tournament Report

April 9, 2014

Fifty-six players turned out to compete in the three-section 2014 Freeport Open played on March 30th. International Master David Vigorito shared first place in the Open section with Carther Theogene, Wesley Parker went unbeaten and untied in the U1800 section and Ben Amar and Carter Brock did the same in the U1300 section. Anand Wins FIDE Candidates Tournament

March 30, 2014

The rematch is on. Vishy Anand has won the fourteen round FIDE Candidates Tournament held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia to select the challenger to World Champion Magnus Carlsen in a match scheduled for later this year. Sergey Karjakin finished in clear second while Levon Aronian, the tournament's highest rated player and de facto favorite to challenge Carlsen, finished a disappointing equal sixth.

Mainers at the Eastern Class Championships

March 27, 2014

Of the 254 players competing in seven sections of the Eastern Class Championships on the weekend of March 14th, 2014 in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, ten were from the great state of Maine. Aaron Spencer and Troy Franklin played in the Expert (2000-2199) section, Jim DuBois and John Phythyon played in the Class A (1800-1999) section, William Ravn, Curt Brock, Gabe Borland and Greg Anderson played in the Class B (1600-1799) section and Brian Hurst and Dan DeLuca tried their hand in the Class C (1400-1599) section. More Chess in Maine's Print Media

Over the past few weeks, Maine's mainstream print media has been abuzz with chess in general and Matthew Fishbein in particular. State Scholastic Individual Championships Tournament Report

Seventy-two scholastic chess players gathered at the University of Maine Memorial Union in Orono on March 22nd to duel for individual honors in K-3, K-6, K-8, and K-12 championship and Under 1200 sections.
