Former DISES Chess Player Takes Blue Hill Team to State Championships

State Scholastic Team Championships Tournament Report

March 13, 2014

The 2014 State Scholastic Chess Team Championships were held Saturday, March 8th, in the Memorial Union, at the University of Maine Orono. Two hundred seventy-seven players supported by coaches and parents gathered to contest team honors in the K-3, K-6, Junior High, and High School sections. Also at stake were individual achievements leading to invitation to the Individual Championships to be held at the same location on March 22. Each player competed in four games with team honors decided by total points scored for the four games or, in the case of the High School Championship section, by head-to-head match play.

Mainers at the World Amateur Team East

The world's largest team chess tournament--the 44th Annual World Amateur Team East--was played at the Parsippany, New Jersey Hilton on February 15-17, 2014. Of the 1,173 players in 278 teams five were from the great state of Maine! As far as we know, this represented the first time in the history of the tournament that Maine had fielded a team. The Maine team consisted of four players: Aaron Spencer, Troy Franklin, Jim DuBois and Gabe Borland. Matthew Fishbein played on a mixed team with his coach IM David Vigorito.

All Saints Winter Warm-Up Tournament Report

A whopping sixty-two players competed in the All Saints Winter Warm-Up tournament played at All Saints School in Bangor on Saturday, February 22, 2014. Aaron Spencer Wins U2000 Section at 2014 Foxwoods Open

Maine's own Aaron Spencer went undefeated in the U2000 section of the 12th Foxwoods Open played on January 22-26, 2014 in Mashantucket, Conn. to take clear first with a score of 6.0 points in seven rounds. With a performance rating of 2234, he rolled over a number of A-class players and stoked his rating to an expert-level 2057. Five other Mainers competed in the tournament as well: Matthew Fishbein, Dmitry Albin, Gabe Borland, Brian Hurst and Ian Youth.
