Mainers at the World Amateur Team East

The world's largest team chess tournament--the 44th Annual World Amateur Team East--was played at the Parsippany, New Jersey Hilton on February 15-17, 2014. Of the 1,173 players in 278 teams five were from the great state of Maine! As far as we know, this represented the first time in the history of the tournament that Maine had fielded a team. The Maine team consisted of four players: Aaron Spencer, Troy Franklin, Jim DuBois and Gabe Borland. Matthew Fishbein played on a mixed team with his coach IM David Vigorito.

All Saints Winter Warm-Up Tournament Report

A whopping sixty-two players competed in the All Saints Winter Warm-Up tournament played at All Saints School in Bangor on Saturday, February 22, 2014. This event serves as a dry run for the upcoming scholastic state championships coming up on March 8th (teams) and March 22nd (individuals). Chess Art at the Bangor Public Library

Fred Irons is a man of many talents. A chess player and coach, university professor, musician, writer and artist are just a few of the possible titles one could attribute to this fine gentleman. Aaron Spencer Wins U2000 Section at 2014 Foxwoods Open

February 7, 2014

Maine's own Aaron Spencer went undefeated in the U2000 section of the 12th Foxwoods Open played on January 22-26, 2014 in Mashantucket, Conn. to take clear first with a score of 6.0 points in seven rounds. With a performance rating of 2234, he rolled over a number of A-class players and stoked his rating to an expert-level 2057. Five other Mainers competed in the tournament as well: Matthew Fishbein, Dmitry Albin, Gabe Borland, Brian Hurst and Ian Youth. Legions of K-8 Chess Players Participate in Ellsworth Chess Afternoon

On Monday, February 3rd, upwards of 150 K-8 students participated in the third in a series of informal chess matches hosted by the Ellsworth Middle School and organized by Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School chess coach Dick Powell. These non-USCF rated "chess afternoons" give scholastic players an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming state team and individual scholastic championships held in March at the University of Maine Orono and to have great fun while they're at it.

2014 MLK Day Tournament Report

Sixty-two players turned out on January 20th to play in the 15th Annual MLK Day Tournament hosted by the Stillwater Montessori School in Old Town. The tournament featured four section: Open, K-12, K-8 and K-6 non-rated. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables.

Saco Open Tournament Report

January 26, 2014

Thirty-one players participated in the two section 2014 Saco Open played at the Hampton Inn in Saco, Maine on January 18th-19th. GM Alexander Ivanov and IM David Vigorito shared first in the open section with 3.5 points. In the U1750 section, newcomer Carther Theogene swept the field with 4.0 points in four games and posted a provisional rating of USCF 2192.

9th Annual Joe Brown Memorial Tournament Report

January 26, 2014

On Saturday January 25th, twenty-six young chess players took part in the 8th Annual Joe Brown Memorial Chess Tournament honoring a former Deer Isle-Stonington chess player. In this non-rated tournament, each player completed four rounds except players in the 7th-8th grade division who played in a three-round quad. The time control was Game/15.
