ChessMaine.net has been selected by the Chess Journalists of America as the Best USCF State Chapter Website for 2014. This is the third time the official website of the Maine Chess Association has been honored by the Chess Journalists of America. The CJA is an American organization of chess journalists created to promote high quality chess journalism, to provide assistance to the working journalist through articles and contacts and to recognize chess journalism at its best through an annual awards program. Morin Wins Houlton August Quad

Roger Morin won the Houlton August Quad played on August 9th at The Art Studio in Houlton with a perfect 3.0 points in three games. The other three participants--Ray Haines, Lance Beloungie and Roger Hardison--all tied for second place with 1.0 point. Here's the USCF crosstable and a selected game.

Maine Chess Player of the Year Current Standings

Lance Beloungie leads the Maine Chess Player of the Year competition with a score of 25.2 points. He is trailed by Roger Morin and Curt Brock with 20.5 and 20.0 points respectively. The next event is the First Lincoln Open on Saturday, September 27, 2014. More information on the year-long Maine Chess Player of the Year competition can be found here.

Mainers at the 2014 Denker, Barber and National Girls' Invitational

The Denker Tournament of High School Champions, the Barber Tournament of K-8 Champions and the National Girls' Invitational Tournament (NGIT) are underway here in Orlando at The Rosen Centre Hotel, site of the 2014 U.S. Open. Maine is well represented with a full team, with representatives to each tournament. In the Denker, State High School Champion Matthew Fishbein of Cape Elizabeth is back for the fourth consecutive year representing Maine in either the Barber or the Denker. K-8 Champion Ian Youth of Scarborough and The Breakwater School of Portland is the Barber representative, and Deer Isle's Bethany Humphrey, a student at The Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone, is Maine's representative to the NGIT.

Fort Fairfield Potato Blossom Festival Chess Tournament and Human Chess Game

July 24, 2014

On July 12, 2014 the annual Potato Blossom Festival Chess Tournament was held in Fort Fairfield. In a small, but potent field, Ray Haines of Fort Fairfield, went 3-0 to take first. Todd Snyder and Lance Beloungie tied for second-third with 1.5 points and Roger Hardison rounded out the crosstable scoreless. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crostable.

Morin-Snyder Match Redux

July 23, 2014

Roger Morin and Todd Snyder engaged in a six-game, G/120 match over the course of two weeks in July. After trading wins and losses for the first four games Morin won two in a row and held a draw in the last game to win the match by a score of 3.5-2.5. Here's the USCF crostable and a selected game.

Impressions of the Polgar from Maine's Representative

Two Chess Players Needed for Live Match in Bowdoinham

Peggy Muir, the 2014 Chair of the Merrymeeting Arts Center in Bowdoinham, is looking for two experienced chess players to play an exhibition match with live chess pieces at their Wonderland Doll Tea Party on Sunday, August 3rd from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. The Center will have a huge board and children to be chess pieces (with appropriate head gear). Bethany Humphrey Turns in Strong Performance at Susan Polgar Invitational in St. Louis

Maine's representative to the Susan Polgar National Invitational tournament for girls finished the six-round tournament with 3.0 points. Bethany Humphrey conceded only one loss in the event, scoring four draws and a win and outpacing her pre-tournament rating by more than 300 points! Congratulations to Bethany on her fine performance. Waynflete School Seeking Chess Instructor

The Waynflete School in Portland is seeking an instructor for its new chess club for grades 3-5. The club will meet from September 8th - November 14th from 3:15-4:30 on Tuesdays after school. The compensation is $450 for the trimester, with the hope that the club will also meet for the winter and spring trimesters.
