The Denker Tournament of High School Champions, the Barber Tournament of K-8 Champions and the National Girls' Invitational Tournament (NGIT) are underway here in Orlando at The Rosen Centre Hotel, site of the 2014 U.S. Open. Maine is well represented with a full team, with representatives to each tournament. In the Denker, State High School Champion Matthew Fishbein of Cape Elizabeth is back for the fourth consecutive year representing Maine in either the Barber or the Denker. K-8 Champion Ian Youth of Scarborough and The Breakwater School of Portland is the Barber representative, and Deer Isle's Bethany Humphrey, a student at The Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone, is Maine's representative to the NGIT. |

On July 12, 2014 the annual Potato Blossom Festival Chess Tournament was held in Fort Fairfield. In a small, but potent field, Ray Haines of Fort Fairfield, went 3-0 to take first. Todd Snyder and Lance Beloungie tied for second-third with 1.5 points and Roger Hardison rounded out the crosstable scoreless. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crostable. |

Roger Morin and Todd Snyder engaged in a six-game, G/120 match over the course of two weeks in July. After trading wins and losses for the first four games Morin won two in a row and held a draw in the last game to win the match by a score of 3.5-2.5. Here's the USCF crostable and a selected game. |

Peggy Muir, the 2014 Chair of the Merrymeeting Arts Center in Bowdoinham, is looking for two experienced chess players to play an exhibition match with live chess pieces at their Wonderland Doll Tea Party on Sunday, August 3rd from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. The Center will have a huge board and children to be chess pieces (with appropriate head gear). Maine's representative to the Susan Polgar National Invitational tournament for girls finished the six-round tournament with 3.0 points. Bethany Humphrey conceded only one loss in the event, scoring four draws and a win and outpacing her pre-tournament rating by more than 300 points! Congratulations to Bethany on her fine performance. The Waynflete School in Portland is seeking an instructor for its new chess club for grades 3-5. The club will meet from September 8th - November 14th from 3:15-4:30 on Tuesdays after school. The compensation is $450 for the trimester, with the hope that the club will also meet for the winter and spring trimesters. Ted Belanoff, a master from New York, took his opponents out in succession to score a perfect 4.0 points in four games at the 2014 ChessMaine.net Championship contested at Colby College on June 29th. Eight players convened on May 31st, 2014 at the Art Studio in Houlton to compete in the May Houlton Open. This three round, G/75 Maine Chess Player of the Year Tournament was won by Roger Morin with a perfect 3.0 points in three games.
