Cape Elizabeth Chess Team Featured in the Current

The Cape Elizabeth High School chess team has been featured in the online journal Current. After an impressive victory at the scholastic team championships in March, Matthew Fishbein, Cape's top board, has played in his last Maine scholastic championship. Taking Fishbein's place on board one for Cape Elizabeth in academic year 2016-2017 will be Wesley Parker, currently the second highest-rated scholastic player in the state.

Maine Mathematics Science & Engineering Talent Search

For over 16 years, the Maine Mathematics Science & Engineering Talents Search (MMSETS) has been offering a variety of mathematics, engineering, and problem-solving enrichment classes for children and adults alike. MMSETS has offered after school and vacation workshops for children, problem solving competitions, workshops for children and adults, and continuing education and curriculum development classes for teachers. Over the years, many students who have taken part in MMSETS classes, camps and workshops have also been involved with scholastic chess in their schools and communities. ChessMaine pleased to pool our efforts to enrich the MMSETS curriculum with chess and chess instruction for children across the state.

2016 Maine Closed Championship: April 9-10!

The 2016 Maine Closed Championship is next weekend, April 9-10, at the Waterville Grand Hotel. There's still time to reserve a room at the "Chess Rate" of $69. Sergey Karjakin is the Challenger!

It was going to be either Sergey Karjakin or Fabiano Caruana. In the last round of the Candidates Tournament Karjakin was able to beat Caruana to finish the tournament a full point ahead of his nearest rival. Karjakin will therefore challenge Magnus Carlsen for the World Chess Championship to be played in New York City in November of this year. Congratulations Sergey!

Candidates Tournament Goes to the Final Round

There's a very real possibility that the next challenger for the World Chess Championship will be an American by the name of Fabiano Caruana. It all boils down to the fourteenth and final round of the Candidates Tournament being played tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. eastern, 3:00 p.m. local in Moscow, Russia. If Caruana wins the game he is the Challenger; if he draws, the situation becomes more complicated and will depend on tiebreaks which we will decipher and explain to you with the help of chessbase.com.

2016 Scholastic Individual Championships Tournament Report

Eighty-one scholastic chess players competed in the 45th Anniversary Edition of the Maine State Scholastic Individual Championships at the University of Maine in Orono on Saturday, March 26, 2016. State champions were determined in five sections: High School, High School U1200, Junior High School, K-6 (Elementary), and K-3 (Primary). Manchester March GM Norm Tournament Report

The Manchester March GM Norm took place from March 2-7, 2016 in Manchester, New Hampshire. New Hampshire native GM Josh Friedel led wire to wire to win with 7/10. No players earned GM norms. 2016 New Hampshire Closed Tournament Report

The 2016 New Hampshire Closed was played on March 3-6, 2016 and featured the winners of the 2015 New Hampshire Chess Association events, plus the top rated residents who were not winners to fill out the field. IM Joseph Fang took clear first with 4/5. Christopher Wood was second with 3.5/5, and Hal Terrie completed the prize winners with 3/5.
