Manchester March GM Norm Tournament Report

The Manchester March GM Norm took place from March 2-7, 2016 in Manchester, New Hampshire. New Hampshire native GM Josh Friedel led wire to wire to win with 7/10. No players earned GM norms. The tournament was directed by Ken Ballou, Alex Relyea, and Matt Phelps for Relyea Chess. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables, and games.

2016 New Hampshire Closed Tournament Report

March 18, 2016

The 2016 New Hampshire Closed was played on March 3-6, 2016 and featured the winners of the 2015 New Hampshire Chess Association events, plus the top rated residents who were not winners to fill out the field. IM Joseph Fang took clear first with 4/5. Christopher Wood was second with 3.5/5, and Hal Terrie completed the prize winners with 3/5. Names of Players Invited to Scholastic Individuals Tournament Free of Charge

On Saturday, March 26, 2016 the Scholastic Individual Championships will take place at the University of Maine in Orono. All scholastic chess players are warmly welcomed to attend. A number of players are invited to the "Individuals" free of charge based on their performance in the Scholastic Team Championships played last Saturday, March 12, 2016. Ian Youth's Beginner's Chess Workbook

2015 Maine State Scholastic K-8 Champion Ian Youth authored A Beginner's Chess Workbook as part of his final project at the Breakwater School in Portland. Film Screening of Computer Chess with Bowdoin College Professor Clare Bates Congdon at Railroad Square Cinema in Waterville

Hou Yifan Wins Women's World Championship

Hou Yifan of China won the ninth game and match of the Women's World Championship with the score of 6.0-3.0 over Maria Muzychuk of Ukraine. With this win, Yifan becomes Women's World Champion for the fourth time. Here are images, and links to the official site and games.

2016 Scholastic Team Championships Tournament Report

Two hundred seventy-five scholastic chess players descended on the University of Maine in Orono from all corners of the state on Saturday, March 12, to compete in the Maine State Scholastic Team Chess Championships. From Van Buren to Cape Elizabeth and many communities in between players, parents, coaches, and volunteers helped to create this massive event. In Memory of C. Stuart Laughlin

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of C. Stuart Laughlin on March 4, 2016 at the age of 82. Stuart was president of the Portland Chess Club for many years. A tournament organizer, director, and player, he was one of the most important and influential figures in the history of Maine chess. Stuart left his mark on generations of chess players. He was kind, gracious, and loyal to his community. He will be sorely missed. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends.

ChessMaine Celebrates Ten Years!

On this day in 2006, ChessMaine.net posted its first story. In the ensuing ten years we have become the official site of the Maine Chess Association, received recognition from the Chess Journalists of America on four occasions for the best state chess association website, posted over 2,500 entries, and been visited over 508,000 times by chess enthusiasts all over the world. We extend a huge thank you to the Maine chess community and look forward to our next decade!

Candidates Tournament Begins in Moscow

Eight of the world's top grandmasters are in to Moscow to play in a fourteen-round, double round-robin tournament that will determine the challenger to World Champion Magnus Carlsen in November, 2016 in the New York.
