Olympia Serban, age 10, was recently recognized in the June 2008 issue of Chess Life for Kids! for solving a tricky mate-in-two problem. Her solution was selected from all the correct entries and she will receive a copy of Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess, and Chess Tactics for Kids by Murray Chandler. Help Send Maine Girls Champion to National Girls Championship

This year's Maine Girls Champion, Sorel Edes of Orono, needs our help to get to the Susan Polgar National Invitational (SPNI) for Girls in Lubbock, Texas. The SPNI selects one girl from each state to compete in the most prestigious all-girls event in the United States, July 27 - August 1. This is quite and honor but expenses are high and the Maine Girls Champion needs our help.

USA Chess Returns to Maine

USA Chess, the largest and premier chess camp organizer for children in the United States, returns to Maine for a five-day chess camp in Cape Elizabeth on August 4-8, 2008. The camp is designed for children age 5-16 at all ability levels. The response from last year's camp was overwhelmingly positive. Hope to see you at camp!

Alan Kobernat Wins Second Annual ChessMaine.net Championship

Alan Kobernat, a former master from California on a mission to play a USCF-rated tournament in each of the 50 states, added Maine to his list in winning style. Scoring a perfect 4.0, Kobernat just edged out last year's ChessMaine.net Championship winner Philip Lowell who scored 3.5 points.

ChessMaine.net Championship June 28th--Don't Miss It!

The 2nd Annual ChessMaine.net Championship will be played at Colby College in Waterville on Saturday, June 28, 2008. A $400 prize fund based on 30 entries has been established with $100 going to the winner and $50 to first in each section A-E and U1000. WCCF June Swiss Tournament Report

Mainers in USCF Top 100 Lists

Maine has four scholastic players in the USCF Top 100 Lists for June 2008. Lucas McCain (1816), Fritz Eyerer (1791), Matthew Fishbein (1363) and Margaret Bryan (1360) each cracked the list of the top 100 rated players in the nation for their age group.
