Chess Instruction at the Huse School

June 4, 2008

The Adventures at Huse project is an overall effort of the Sagadahoc Commununity Justice Project in partnership with the Bath School Department to facilitate out-of-school activities for youth and families. These programs are held at the Huse School on 39 Andrews Street in Bath. This Saturday, June 7, 2008 Chess instructor Sean Donovan will be giving a chess workshop for all ages.

Cornville Elementary School Championship

May 31, 2008

Sixteen students at Cornville Elementary School recently played in their school's four round chess championship. A new experience for many of the players this tournament nonetheless produced some exciting and fighting games. A three-way tie for first resulted between Kaytlin Allen, William Kelly and Orion Poulin.

WCCF May Swiss Tournament Report

A three-way tie for first was the result at the Washington County Chess Federation May Swiss played on May 17, 2008 in Calais. On tiebreaks it was Roger Peterson (first), Fritz Eyerer (second) and Roger Morin (third) but all scored 3.0 points to share top honors.

Fishbein vs. Spahn: Another Perspective

Current Maine State Co-Champion and Bates College English Professor Steven Dillon took a look at the recently published Fishbein - Spahn game from the scholastic team state championship earlier this year and was moved to write his own set of annotations. Matthew Fishbein vs. George Spahn

May 23, 2008

George Spahn, a fifth grader at Palermo Consolidated School, scored a perfect 4.0 points in four games to tie for first at the 2008 Scholastic Teams State Championship held in March at the University of Maine, Orono. One of Spahn's victories was a fine effort with the black pieces against Matthew Fishbein, a powerhouse player from Cape Elizabeth who has been ranked in the top 100 players in the nation for his age group. ChessMaine.net Championship Announced

The Second Annual ChessMaine.net Championship will take place on June 28, 2008 at Colby College in Waterville. The four-round G/75 tournament will offer a prize fund of $400 based on 30 entries with $100 to the winner and $50 for best in each class A-E and U1000. We hope to see you at this great event in a beautiful setting.

Maine Chess Player of the Year Current Standings

After four tournaments thus far in 2008, Michael Dudley (30.5 points) has a razor-thin lead over Ruben Babayan (30.0 points) and the two players tied for third Lucas McCain and Nicholas Parsons (both with 29.0 points) in the Maine Chess Player of the Year competition. Games from the 2008 Maine Championship

We've searched, sifted and selected games submitted by players from the Maine Championship Tournament played at the University of Maine, Orono on April 12-13, 2008 and won by Bates College professor Steven Dillon and Bowdoin College student Jason Spector. Some of the games are gems others are diamonds in the rough but all are interesting, educational and fun to play over. Thanks to all players for submitting their games. We hope you enjoy them.

Elementary Nationals Final Report

Day 3 is a dramatic day at the Elementary Nationals. It is the day that new national stars emerge, trophies are won, and new motivations are born for those who didn't perform as they had hoped. This year's tournament featured a clearly tougher field than recent years.
