ChessMaine Interviews: Seth Yentes

Former Maine elementary and junior high school chess champion Seth Yentes is the new chess coach at the Toddy Pond School in Swanville, Maine. In addition to teaching chess he also teaches cello, is a self-proclaimed "passionate orchardist" and is running for the Maine House of Representatives District 42 seat. We ran into Seth at the state scholastic team championship and asked him about his aspirations in both chess and political spheres.

WCCF April Swiss Tournament Report

May 3, 2008

The WCCF April Swiss played on April 19, 2008 in Pembroke, Maine turned out to be a round robin with four players participating: Alba (Hoty) Briggs, Nathaniel Simpson, Ezra Briggs and Theodore Jans. Hoty Briggs padded his rating with seven points by defeating all comers to score 3.0 points and take clear first, Simpson finished second with 2.0 points, Ezra Briggs took third with 1.0 point and Jans rounded out the quad finishing fourth.

M.I. Chigorin Chess Club: St. Petersburg, Russia

Dr. Paul A. Wlodkowski, Associate Professor of Engineering at Maine Maritime Academy, will be giving a series of lectures at the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy (AMSMA) in St. Petersburg, Russia as part of a faculty exchange with Maine Maritime Academy. On a recent trip to St. Petersburg, Dr. Wlodkowski visited the Mikhail Ivanovich Chigorin Chess Club and returned with these images and impressions.

Jason Spector Featured in Bowdoin Orient Weekly

National Senior High School Championships: Final Report

With the seventh and final round of the National Senior High School Championships completed, the John Bapst Chess Team will return to Maine with heads held high. The team earned a total score of 29 out of a possible 56 points--our congratulations to the players and their coaches for this outstanding accomplishment. National Senior High School Championships: Day 2 Report

After two days and five rounds of extremely tough, national-level chess, the John Bapst team is holding their own against very talented competition. Zach Smith leads his team with 4.0 points; Fritz Eyerer, Aaron Spencer, Kurt Eyerer and Omar Khan have 3.0 points; Maggie Bryan, Anna Bryan and Daniel Honeycutt have 2.0 points. National Senior High School Championships: Day 1 Report

Seven players from John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor, Maine made the trek to Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the National Senior High School Championships taking place at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta from April 18 - 20, 2008. This seven-round G/120 tournament played in five sections, attracts the top high school players from across the country to compete for national titles. With two rounds down, Kurt Eyerer leads his teammates with 2.0 points. All other Bapst players have thus far scored 1 and 1.

Steven Dillon and Jason Spector: 2008 Maine Champions

Steven Dillon and Jason Spector both had 4.0 points going into the last round of the 2008 Maine Chess Championship played at the University of Maine, Orono on April 12 - 13, 2008. Agreeing to a quick draw, they clinched the championship with only Roger Morin within reach. Morin, himself the 1980 Maine Champion, could not defeat Ruben Babayan in the last round and had to settle for equal sixth place.

Bapst Fundraiser Tournament Report

With Georgia on their mind and a scene from White Christmas outside the window, the John Bapst chess team joined by tournament stalwart Paul Ciarrocchi and fledgling player Dana Wilson played a USCF-rated octet Friday evening April 4, 2008 in the FFA room of the Memorial Union on the University of Maine campus in Orono.
