John Bapst Chess on WLBZ Channel 2 in Bangor

WLBZ Channel 2 in Bangor recently featured the John Bapst Chess Team (this year's high school co-champions with Bangor High School) in a news report profiling the team and their preparation for the High School National Championship that will take place from April 18 - 20, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia. Maine State Championship *Reminder*

April 8, 2008

The Maine State Championship will take place this weekend, April 12 - 13, 2008 at the University of Maine, Orono. This five-round Swiss tournament is open to Maine residents, students and military personnel stationed in Maine. Time control is 40 moves in 90 minutes followed by sudden death in 60 minutes. The first place finisher will be awarded the Maine State Champion title, $200 and the Harlow B. Daly trophy. Winners in classes A-D as well as U1200 will be awarded $100. Hope to see you this weekend at Maine's premier tournament.

John Bapst High School Fundraising Tournament

The Maine state scholastic tournaments have concluded and we now have an opportunity to support one of the winning teams in their bid to attend the National Senior High School Championship to be held April 18-20, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, Georgia. Maine Scholastic Individual Championship Tournament Report

Ninety-six players competed in the Maine Scholastic Individual Championship on March 29, 2008 at the University of Maine, Orono. Regarded as the elite scholastic tournament of the year, the "Individual States" decided state champions in five sections: High School Championship, High School Reserve, Junior High School Championship, Elementary (K-6) Championship and Primary (K-3) Championship. The Big Bad Bobcat

On February 2, 2008 the Bobcat Open was played at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Forty players turned out in three sections--Open, Under 1601 and the Rated Beginners Open (Under 1200). Steven Dillon took clear first in the Open with 3.5 points. He was trailled by Eric Moskow who made the trip up from Florida to participate in this tournament and Andrew Tichenor.

Sorel Edes Wins Girls Scholastic Championship

March 23, 2008

The Girls Scholastic Championship, played at the University of Maine, Orono on Saturday, March 22nd, went down to the last games in both the Championship and U600 sections. Sorel Edes managed a draw in her last round game vs. Haley DeLuca Lowell to give her 3.5 points and the title in the Championship section. In the last round of the U600 section, Julia Shaffer defeated Anne Witick to score a perfect 4.0 and take clear first. We bring you the illustrated tournament report with crosstables and video.
