Scholastic Individual Championship and Sidekick Quads

The third in a trilogy of scholastic tournaments--the Scholastic Individual State Championship--will take place on Saturday, March 29th in the Memorial Union at the University of Maine, Orono. And for those players not playing in the scholastic tournament, the Fourth Annual Sidekick Quads, a fundraising tournament for Maine Scholastic Chess offering rated and unrated sections, will be played concurrently. This reminder contains a list of players invited to participate in the scholastic individuals at no cost.

Girls Championship Tournament *Reminder*

The second of three consecutive state scholastic championship tournaments--the Maine Scholastic Chess Championship for Girls to determine Maine's representative to the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls --will take place this Saturday, March 22nd at the University of Maine, Orono in room 201 of Shibles Hall. Shibles Hall houses the College of Education and Human Development and is just a short walk from the Memorial Union. You can use this map to help you locate Shibles Hall. The tournament will have an Open section and an U600 section so all girl players are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Scholastic Team State Championship Tournament Report

The Scholastic Team State Chess Championship took place at the University of Maine, Orono on Saturday, March 15th. The largest chess event of the year in Maine by far, the team championship drew players from across the state to compete for state titles in High School (K-12), Junior High (K-8), Elementary (K-6) and Primary (K-3) sections. Scholastic Championship Tournament Updates

The Elementary, Junior High and High School Team State Championships will take place tomorrow, Saturday, March 15th as scheduled in the University of Maine, Orono Memorial Union. Coaches and Parents: If you will be delayed due to weather please communicate with your respective tournament leader (contact information is provided below)--you may request a 1/2-point bye for the first round. We look forward to a great day for traditionally the largest chess tournament on the Maine calendar.

Scholastic Team State Championship Cancelled Due to Weather

The Scholastic Team State Championship to be played on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the University of Maine, Orono, has been cancelled due to weather and rescheduled for Saturday, March 15, 2008. Other information in the registration form (location, round times, etc.) remains correct. The Championship for Girls, previously scheduled for March 15th, will be played at a later date.

A Tale of Two Rogers at WCCF February Swiss

March 4, 2008

Roger Morin and Roger Peterson both had perfect scores after three rounds at the Washington County Chess Federation February Swiss played on February 16th in East Machias. They met each other in the last round and agreed to a draw to share first place. Ezra Briggs scored three points, his only loss being to Peterson, to take first in the K-8 scholastic section.

Scholastic Team State Championship Coming Up

March 4, 2008

Because of last week's snow cancellation, the Scholastic Team State Championship to be played on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the University of Maine, Orono, will be the first major scholastic event of the year. Historically the largest tournament of the year, the "Team States" as they are known, will attract elementary, middle and high school players from accross the state. There are rumblings of another (!) weather event on Friday into Saturday so stay tuned here for updated cancellation information.

Morin and Eyerer Neck-And-Neck At Winter Warm-Up

Forty-seven players turned out in four sections for the All Saints Winter Warm-Up Tournament played on February 23, 2008 at the All Saints School in Bangor. Winners in the Open section were Roger Morin and John Bapst High School senior Fritz Eyerer whose rating has skyrocketed more than 200 points in the past year. The two players drew each other in the final round to share first place.

State Scholastic Season Gets Underway This Weekend

The 2008 Maine Scholastic Chess Championship Season kicks off this weekend with two tournaments. The All Girls State Championship, the event that selects one girl to participate in the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls tournament later this year, will take place on Saturday, March 1st at the University of Maine, Orono. The Southwestern Maine Scholastic Chess Championship, also played on Saturday, will again be hosted by Cheverus High School in Portland. Here are the details including registration information. The All Girls Tournament and the Southwestern Championship have been cancelled due to snow. Both have been rescheduled to March 15th.

ChessMaine Visits The Boylston Chess Club

On a recent vist to Boston, we stopped in to see our friends at the Boylston Chess Club now located at 240 Elm Street in Somerville. One of the oldest Chess Clubs in New England, the Boylston has been in business since 1919 and has had luminaries such as Harry Nelson Pillsbury and modern grandmasters including Larry Christiansen, Patrick Wolff and Roman Dzindzichashvili amongst its membership.
