St. Valentine's Day Massacre Quads Tournament Report

Twenty-four players filled six quads just perfectly at the St. Valentine's Day Massacre Quads Tournament played at the University of Maine, Orono on Saturday, February 16, 2008. Of the 24 players, only two blanked their opposition: Bangor High School student Keji Xu and Orono High School chess coach Fred Irons both scored 3-0 to take first in the fourth and second quads respectively.

Valentine's Tournament *Reminders*

February 13, 2008

Two tournaments are scheduled in Maine this Valentine's weekend. On Saturday, February 16th, the monthly Washington County Chess Federation Swiss will be held in Machias and the annual St. Valentine's Day Massacre Quads will take place at the University of Maine, Orono. MMA Competes in College Chess League on ICC

February 6, 2008

On February 3rd, the Maine Maritime Academy Chess Team competed against Harvard University in the first round of the five round Online Team Championship hosted by the the Internet Chess Club with support from the College Chess League, and the United States Chess Federation College Chess Committee. Although MMA lost the match 3-1, they scored a big victory for chess in Maine and beyond by being on the vanguard of this technological innovation.

PVC Cunningham Tournament

February 3, 2008

One thing is certain. It will be an interesting high school teams state championship this year. Orono High School, after leading the PVC League all season, lost to John Bapst in the end-of-the-year Cunningham Tournament played on February 2nd at Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. The other two PVC teams, Bangor High School and Hampden Academy, weren't far behind.

Tragedy at MLK Tournament in South Portland

January 31, 2008

The chess events at the MLK Weekend Chess Extravaganza were overshadowed by the sudden and tragic loss of one of the participants, long-time Maine chessplayer and professional comedian and magician, Bob Nixon. During his second round game Bob suddenly became incapacitated. Tournament participants Lee Doucette and Mark Parker valiantly performed CPR until an ambulance arrived. Bob passed away later that day at Maine Medical Center. Our heartfelt condolences to Bob's family and friends.

Orono Wins PVC Regular Season; Tournament This Saturday

January 28, 2008

In the last match of the regular season, Bangor High School beat Hampden Academy 12.5 - 1.5 and Orono High School beat John Bapst 11 - 5. Orono finishes the regular season undefeated with 14 points followed by Bangor with 9 and John Bapst with 5. Hampden Academy finishes the season scoreless. The PVC end-of-the-season tournament is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. this Saturday, February 2nd at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor.

Stillwater Montessori Tournament Report

January 25, 2008

The 9th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Chess Tournament, hosted by Stillwater Montessori School, was held on Monday, January 21, 2008 in Old Town. There were 48 participants in four sections, three of which were USCF rated. Fritz Eyerer and Aaron Spencer, each with three points, played in the championship round for the title. Eyerer came out on top to score a perfect 4-0 and Spencer tied for second with Charles Clark each scoring 3-1. Bangor High School student Henry Chai received the top K-12 trophy.

In Memoriam: Robert Nixon 1945 - 2008

Portland - Robert F. " The Magician" Nixon, 63, of Auburn, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Maine Medical Center. He was born in Portland, January 4, 1945 the son of Frederic and Velma Hersey Nixon. Bob was educated in Portland schools and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era and was married to Laurence Bonneau for 36 magicial and wonderful years.

All are winners at 2nd Annual Joe Brown Memorial

After observing a moment of silence in memory of Joe Brown, former Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary chess player and Bobby Fischer, former world chess champion, 26 young chess players in kindergarten through 8th grade battled it out in four divisions: K-2nd grade, 3rd-4th grade, 5th-6th grade and 7th-8th grade in the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School Cafeteria.
