Dan Hayes is 2007-2008 UMaine Chess Champion

Dan Hayes, a first year undergraduate student at the University of Maine (UM) in Orono, is the new UM Chess Champion for 2007-2008. The UM Chess Championship, played from October 17 - November 16, 2007, was open to all full-time undergraduate and graduate students. At the end of the regulation four rounds (with a time control of G/45), Hayes was tied for the lead at 3.0 with Brian Chick. Hayes won the well-fought rapid playoff game (with a time control of G/10) to take the title. Charles Jones took third place with a score of 2.5.

Bobby Fischer Dies in Iceland at 64

MLK Weekend Chess Events

PVC Match 6: Orono keeps rollin'; Bangor beats Bapst

January 12, 2008

In the sixth match of the PVC league, Orono High School beat Hampden Academy 9.5 - 2.5 and Bangor High School edged out Bapst 7 - 5. Orono leads the standings with twelve points followed by Bangor High School with seven and John Bapst with five. Hampden Academy is still scoreless.

Organizing committee finalizes details on scholastic state championships

The State Scholastic Chess Championship Organizing Committee, at a meeting on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the University of Maine, Orono, finalized the details of the state scholastic tournaments and made registration materials available. The dates of the tournaments are: Girls Championship March 1st, Team Championship March 8th, Individual Championship March 29th.

Peterson wins John Bapst New Year's

Roger Peterson started the chess year off right with a win at the John Bapst New Year's tournament on January 6, 2008 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor, Maine. Maine's first USCF-rated tournament in 2008 drew forty-four players in four sections. Here is the intensely illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables.

Maine Intercollegiate Chess League Match 2

January 7, 2008

The second Maine Intercollegiate Chess League Tournament, took place on Monday, December 10, 2007 in Castine, Maine at the Maine Maritime Academy campus. The final tally was the University of Maine (8) and Maine Maritime Academy (2) which gives UMaine a 2-0 lead in match play thus far. The time control was 20 moves in 30 minutes for one point or players could agree to play at G/60 for a total of two points. Due to a higher number of MMA players present, UMaine's team played multiple rounds.

Maine ranks fifth in nation for per capita USCF members

With a population of 1,321,505 and 495 USCF members, Maine ranks fifth in the nation for per capita USCF members. Only Kentucky, New Mexico, Arizona and the District of Columbia can boast higher per capita percentages. Still, with only thirty-seven out of every 100,000 residents of Maine being a USCF member, there's lots of work left to do. Here are rankings based on percent population of the state as USCF members. The Best of ChessMaine.net 2007
