Chess "keeps memory alive"

In late January, a chess set will be distributed to each of the 200 fourth-graders in the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire in memory of Jeremy Alex, a 28-year-old who disappeared in the Maine wilderness three years ago. The Jeremy Alex Fund was established by the Portsmouth Rotary in 2005 in memory of Jeremy with the goal of helping at-risk children and teens.

John Bapst New Year's Tournament *Reminder*

Make the John Bapst New Year's Tournament a holiday tradition! Join us on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at John Bapst High School in Bangor for your first tournament chess of the new year. The tournament features four sections (Open, U1400, U1000 and U600) each with four rounds and a time control of game in forty-five minutes.

Maine Team Championship tournament report

December 18, 2007

Nine teams from across the state competed in the Maine Team Championship on Saturday, December 15, 2007 at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. The highest rated team, The Unnamed Winners/Chess Friends, with an average rating of USCF 1798, pulled a come-from-behind victory by beating Saco 1 in the last round to win with a score of 3.5 out of 4.

Peterson wins WCCF December Swiss

Roger Peterson swept the field with a perfect 4/4 at the Washington County Chess Federation December Swiss played on December 15, 2007 at the Beacon of Light in Pembroke, Maine. Tied for second were Roger Morin and Alba Briggs III, who also directed the event. Here's a flash report with USCF crosstables and a few images.

PVC League Match 5: Orono remains undefeated

Because of a snow cancellation on December 3rd, (this is Maine after all) the fifth match of the PVC League season was played on December 13th, at Hampton Academy. The Orono High School team continued their winning ways with a 9 - 5 win over Bangor. Meanwhile, John Bapst beat Hampden 10 - 4 and is now tied for second with Bangor. Match scores thus far are Orono: 10, John Bapst and Bangor: 5, Hampden: 0.

The Coastal Maine Scholastic Chess Club receives chess grant

December 8, 2007

The Coastal Maine Scholastic Chess Club received a grant of nearly three thousand dollars from the Cape Elizabeth Education Foundation to implement a middle school chess program using the Think Like a King Educational Software Program. The grant will provide for purchasing an educational site license for the software as well as chess equipment, materials and a stipend for a staff member to implement the program through academic year '08.

K-8 Chess Afternoon

The first K-8 Chess Afternoon of 2008 will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2008 at the Ellsworth Middle School in Ellsworth, Maine. Fishbein wins Aurora Winter Solstice

Matthew Fishbein, the nine-year-old wunderkind from Cape Elizabeth, won the Open section of the Third Annual Aurora Winter Solstice with 2.5 points in 3 rounds. The tournament, which attracted forty-six players, was played at the Airline Community School in Aurora, Maine on December 1, 2007.

Orono blanks Hampden, Bangor beats Bapst in PVC Match 4

Fielding ten boards, Orono High School plowed through Hampden Academy with the remarkable score of 20-0. Not a single loss or draw in twenty games! Meanwhile, Bangor High School surged passed John Bapst with a 9-5 victory to take control of second place behind Orono. Aurora Winter Solstice *Reminder*

On Saturday, December 1st, the third annual Aurora Winter Solstice chess tournament will take place at the Airline Community School, 26 Great Pond Road in Aurora, Maine. The tournament features four sections: Open, U1400, U1000 and U600/Unrated. Cash prizes are up for grabs in the Open section. In the lower sections, prizes feature chess sets, boards and books, including a wooden set and board for the top K-12 player in the Open. If you're still not convinced, the snack bar will offer a variety of homemade lunches and treats. Any skeptics left?
