Chess--in Miniature

Colin Michael (a.k.a. the "Maine Yankee") of Dresden, Maine is passionate about all things miniature. As a skilled miniature craftsman, he has created countless scale model projects including furniture, rooms and complete houses that are as fascinating as they are beautiful. What really caught our eye though was a position from a Bobby Fischer game on a miniature set with a 3/8 inch king displayed on a 3 1/2 inch diameter Hepplewhite table with two matching chairs and upholstered seats all within an Early American period Captain's Study.

The PVC League Heads to Orono for Match 3

John Bapst High School faced off against Orono and Bangor High School took on Hampden Academy in the third match of the PVC League season. Orono increased its lead over John Bapst to 6.5 points and Bangor is closing in on second. The current standings are: Orono 1st with 32 points, John Bapst 2nd with 25.5, Bangor 3rd with 21 and Hampden 4th with 5.5. The only players with six points are Fritz Eyerer (John Bapst) and Keji Xu (Bangor). The Maine Intercollegiate Chess League

Chess teams from the University of Maine, Orono and Maine Maritime Academy played their first match on Thursday, November 15, 2007 in the newly-minted Maine Intercollegiate Chess League. The pilot match, played at the University of Maine's Nutting Hall, is the first in a series of chess competitions that will include UMaine, Maine Maritime, Bates College, Unity College and possibly others. This report includes: images from the match, crosstables and a selected game.

Maine Chess Player of the Year 2007 Final Results

The final results are in and the numbers have been tallied for the Maine Chess Player of the Year 2007 competition. As we previously reported, Ruben Babayan of Portland took the title with 46 points. This marks the sixth time Babayan has either tied for or won the title outright. Trailing Babayan were Derrick Crocker with 42.8 points, Scott Overlock with 40.5 points, David Rice with 39.3 points and rounding out the top five, last year's Player of the Year, Lee Doucette with 38.5 points.

PVC High School Chess League Match 2

After two matches, Orono High School, led by Ryan Vienneau and Nikolai Renedo, holds onto a slight lead with twenty-two points over John Bapst with nineteen-and-a-half. Bangor High School is in third place with eleven and Hampden Academy is bringing up the rear with one-and-a-half. Updated standings, photos from match two and the Game of the Week await you.

Edes reaps at Hampden Harvest

Cullen Edes took first place in the open section of the Hampden Harvest Tournament on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at Hampden Academy in Hampden, Maine. Edes was unbeaten and untied in four rounds. Topping the K-12 section was Ryan Vienneau, also scoring four points. Reid Horton took first in the K-8 section with two points. This tournament report includes USCF crosstables, selected games and lots of images.

Penobscot Valley Conference High School Chess League

The four high schools that participate in the league are Bangor High School, Hampden Academy, John Bapst Memorial High School and Orono High School. Hampden Harvest Tournament *Reminder*

The Hampden Harvest Tournament at Hampden Academy is this Saturday, November 3, 2007. This four-round tournament will be played in three sections: Open, K-12 and K-8.
