The scholastic chess teams of Deer Isle - Stonington will be hosting a chess-a-thon from Friday, November 9, -Saturday, November 10, 2007 to have fun, play a lot of chess, stay up all night and last but not least: to raise money for a possible trip to the 2008 National Scholastic Chess Championships. |

Chess-in-the-Schools, the not-for-profit educational organization that teaches chess to kindergarten through eighth grade children in New York's inner-city public schools, offers a two-day Teacher Training Institute with the goal of assisting teachers to sucessfully implement chess programs in their schools. Your intrepid reporter recently travelled to New York, took the training and returned with these impressions. |

| Ruben Babayan scored three points at the Maine Open on October 13, 2007 at Southern Maine Community College to tie for first with Andrew Tichenor, Lucas McCain and Derrick Crocker. With this win Babayan becomes the 2007 Maine Chess Player of the Year. Congratulations Ruben! John Bapst High School student Aaron Spencer won the U1600 section and Scott Overlock and Reed Wommack shared first in the Rated Beginners Open section. |  |

The chess program at Nathan Clifford Elementary School in Portland is experiencing tremendous interest and record numbers of third through fifth graders. Chess instructors Frank Smith and Jon Malev are looking for volunteers to help teach, monitor and play chess with their students. Three Maine scholastic players are firmly entrenched in the October 2007 USCF top 100 players in the nation lists based on age. Lucas McCain (1808) is the fifty-sixth strongest fifteen-year-old in the U.S., Cullen Edes (1783) the eighty-sixth strongest eighteen-year-old and Matthew Fishbein (1337) the sixty-second strongest nine-year-old. The Stillwater Montessori School After School Chess Club is starting up on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will meet on Wednesdays when school is in session. It's a free program and will be held at the elementary school location on South Brunswick Street in Old Town. All are welcomed, adults as well as students. |
