Bold.org Offers $1,000 One Move Ahead Chess Scholarship

Bold.org, an online student scholarship platform where anyone can create a customized scholarship, fellowship, or grant, has created a $1,000 One Move Ahead Chess Scholarship available to Maine students. Dror Liebenthal the co-founder and CEO of Bold.org writes, "We are awarding $1,000 in scholarship funding to chess players at any education level whose experience playing chess has influenced their life/career goals in some way."

Maritime Chess Festival Tournament Report

Over the weekend of October 11-14, 2019, the Maritime Chess Festival took place in the beautiful community of Summerside, Prince Edward Island. The Festival, which offered five separate tournaments: Blitz, Open, Junior, Amateur, and Senior as well as other chess-related and sightseeing events, went off swimmingly thanks to the hard work and dedication of many. Particular thanks and kudos go to the Festival's chief organizer Fred McKim of the Maritime Chess Center in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

U.S. to Field Chess Team at 2019 Winter Deaflympics

October 20, 2019

The United States will enter a team in the first-ever Deaflympics to include chess as a sport. Sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the 2019 Deaflympics, to be held at three locations in northern Italy in December of this year, will host hundreds of athletes from over two dozen countries competing in six sports: alpine skiing, chess, cross country skiing, curling, ice hockey, and snowboarding.

Purchasing Roger Morin's Artwork

Former Maine State Champion, organizer, director, coach, and artist Roger Morin, who passed away on July 8th, left a large number of his original artworks in The Art Studio at 102 Court Street in Houlton, Maine. On Friday and Saturday, October 18-19, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. his artworks, many of which are chess themed, will be available for purchase.

Cape Elizabeth Open and Scholastic Tournament Report

The Cape Elizabeth Open and Scholastic was played Saturday September 28th, at the Thomas Memorial Library in Cape Elizabeth. Roger J Morin Memorial Tournament Report

The Roger J Morin Memorial Tournament held on Sunday, September 8th at the University of Maine Orono, honored former Maine Chess Champion, artist, teacher, and friend Roger Morin who passed away on July 8, 2019. One of the goals of the tournament was to establish the Roger J Morin Scholarship Fund which will provide support for Maine chess players pursuing higher education. Thirty-four players competed in three sections. Winners were Jarod Bryan (Open), Zach Brislin and Joshua Starbird (U1600), and John Hoang (U1000).
