Twenty-seven players came out for the Skowhegan Fall Classic chess tournament played on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Skowhegan Area High School. Players competed in two sections. The U1200 section was won by Joshua Lorenzo with a perfect 4.0 points in four rounds. Anthony Benoit followed suit putting up a perfect 4.0 in his first US Chess rated tournament. With great sadness we report the loss of John Curdo who passed away on September 30, 2022. Known for over 50 years as one of the strongest players in New England, John racked up over 1,000 career tournament victories including 17 Massachusetts State Championships and the US Senior Championship. Our deepest condolences to John's family, friends, and chess siblings on the loss of a true gentleman and great titan of chess. |
