Second Annual South Portland High School Tournament Report

11.27.22 A whopping niney-two players competed in the 2nd Annual South Portland High School Chess Tournament played on November 19, 2022. The event had three sections: Open, U1400, and U800. Wyatt Hendrix won the Open section with a perfect 4.0 points. Gavin Cooley did the same in the U1400 section and went from unrated to provisional 1700 in one go, and Avery Zhang and Henry Shannon finished equal first with 4.0 points in the sixty-player (!) U800 section.

What an incredible turnout for the second running of the South Portland High School Chess Tournament on Saturday, November 19, 2022. The three-section, four-round G/45 +5 event attracted huge numbers with sixty players in the U800 section alone.

Wyatt Hendrix continued on his upward spiral by winning the event with an unbeaten and untied 4.0 points. Just off Hendrix's pace was Charlie Creswell who took clear second with 3.5 points. Aaron Spencer, Wayde Daigneault, William Ravn, Gabe Eaton, and Walker Bayless tied for third with 2.5 points.

In the U1400 section, Gavin Cooley went four-for-four to take first place. A four-way tie ensued for second between: Matt Jablonski, Moly Tefft, Joshua Lorenzo, and Christian Zhang each who put up 3.0 points.

In the sixty-player U800 section, Avery Zhang and Henry Shannon finished equal first with 4.0 points. Dillon Colson and Lilly Tripp shared third with 3.5 points.
