With great sadness we report the loss of John Curdo who passed away on September 30, 2022. Known for over 50 years as one of the strongest players in New England, John racked up over 1,000 career tournament victories including 17 Massachusetts State Championships and the US Senior Championship. Our deepest condolences to John's family, friends, and chess siblings on the loss of a true gentleman and great titan of chess. |

Matthew Fishbein, Max Berube, Wyatt Hendrix, Gabe Eaton, Aaron Spencer and Will Ravn traveled to Belgrade, Maine over Juneteenth weekend to play the second Roger J. Morin Memorial chess tournament. They warmed up with a double round of blitz at G/3;+2 and a single round of rapid at G/10;+5, both won by Fishbein with a total of 13/15 before settling in to play a hard-fought FIDE rated 40/90, SD/40;+30 for the title. |

| With great sadness we report the passing of Dr. John Raymond Phythyon, Ph.D. at the age of 79. John was a prolific chess player on the New England circuit competing in tournaments such as the Boston Chess Congress (MA), the Bradley Open (CT), and the Portsmouth Open (NH). John's last tournament, played just four months before his death, was the National Chess Day tournament in Kennebunk, Maine. We extend our deepest condolences to John's family and friends. | |

| Congratulations to Deer Isle-Stonington High School senior Henry Penfold on receiving the school's valedictorian honor. Henry is a longtime member of the Deer Isle-Stonington Chess Team, National Honor Society, Student Council, and participated in cross country, theatre, tennis, band, Eco Club, and Math Team. Henry will be studying marine biology at Bodoin College this fall. | |
