World Championship Match Report: Ding Wins Game 6, Match Tied
04.16.23 The World Chess Championship Match is being contested in Astana, Kazakhstan, from April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren. After six games there have been four decisive results with each player posting two wins and two draws. This represents the most decisive Match up until this point since Karpov - Korchnoi 1981 which had the same score after six games.

In what is developing into one of the most exciting World Championship Matches ever played, Ding Liren has won Game 6 to tie the Match score at 3.0 points apiece.
Ding's play in Game 6 was described in the following terms by commentators watching the Match: absolutely unreal, on a different scale, and total genius. Although Nepo said in the post-game press conference that he played one of the worst games of his career, GM Daniil Dubov, commenting for the official FIDE broadcast of the Match, said that Nepo will be relieved that he didn't miss anything, it was just that Ding played "crazy good."
The topsy-turvy Match has thus far seen wins for Nepo in Games 2 and 5, wins for Ding in Games 4 and 6, and draws in Games 1 and 3. That means Games 4, 5, and 6 were all decisive. Even Kappov - Korchnoi 1981 did not see three decisive results in three consecutive games!
Responding to a question from a journalist after the game about why there have been so many decisive results thus far Ding replied with a wry smile, "Maybe we are not yet as professional as Magnus."
Tomorrow is a rest day. Game 7 will be played on Tuesday, April 18th at 05:00 eastern US time.
