In Memory: John Curdo (1931-2022)
10.17.22 With great sadness we report the loss of John Curdo who passed away on September 30, 2022. Known for over 50 years as one of the strongest players in New England, John racked up over 1,000 career tournament victories including 17 Massachusetts State Championships and the US Senior Championship. Our deepest condolences to John's family, friends, and chess siblings on the loss of a true gentleman and great titan of chess.

The Chess Journalists of America posted a fascinating two-part interview with John Curdo on their website. This historical interview conducted by Alonzo Ross gives an in-depth portrait of John's life.

I played John a number of times in rated events and of course most of the time he won. He was always courteous regardless of the result, and regardless of his opponent's rating. IMHO he must be considered the strongest player originally from New England, and his absence will be missed by those who have known him for so many years.
