Four players each put up 3.0 points in the Open section of the Bapst End of Summer tournament played on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. The winners were: Aaron Spencer, Ryan Tripp, Jacques Blanchette, and Brian Hurst. In the U1200 section, Luc Blanchette, Samanthak Thiagarajan, and Andrew Brenneman shared the top spot. The Cape Elizabeth Chess Club will resume their Saturday morning meetings as of Saturday, September 2, 2017. The club meets at the Local Buzz café, 327 Ocean House Road in Cape Elizabeth, Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Come on down for coffee, breakfast and a few games of chess. After Zurich, the Edinburgh Chess Club is the oldest functioning club in the world. We were recently in Scotland, visited the Edinburg Chess Club, and played chess in some far-flung Scottish locations including the Isle of Skye and up in the Highlands. We're delighted to share our impressions and images of both the club and this beautiful country as well as the Tale of the Lewis Chessmen. |

Fourteen players competed on short notice for the first Bapst Impromtu tournament held at John Bapst Memorial High School on Tuesday, August 15th. Ben Amar topped the crosstable with 3.0 points. He was closely trailed by Wyatt Hendrix and Ben Mock with 2.5 points. The second Bapst Improptu tournament is coming up on Tuesday, August 29th. Hope to see you there! |

Roger Morin won the seven-player August Houlton Open played at the Art Studio in Houlton on August 5th with 3.5 points in four games. Lance Beloungie took clear second with 3.0 points and Leonardo Cui and Ray Haines shared third with 2.5 points apiece. Here's the tournament report with crosstables. |

Scholastic chess player and budding annotator Wyatt Hendrix has selected a very interesting and entertaining game to share with us played by Maine's own Sergio Mejia at the recently completed 45th annual World Open in Philadelphia. Mejia scored 6.0 points in the U2200 section which was just 1.0 point out of the money and 1.5 points out of first place. We hope you enjoy the game and the annotations. |

Eight players turned out for the annual Potato Blossom Festival Chess Tournament held this year at The Fort Fairfield Community Center in Fort Fairfield, Maine on Saturday, July 8, 2017. Canadian Leonardo Cui had a great day going four strait to win the tournament with 4.0 points. A three-way tie ensued for second place between Ansel Schiffer, Roger Morin, and Brian Hurst each putting up 2.5 points. Here's the illustrated tournament report. |
