Potato Blossom Festival Chess Tournament 2017

Eight players turned out for the annual Potato Blossom Festival Chess Tournament held this year at The Fort Fairfield Community Center in Fort Fairfield, Maine on Saturday, July 8, 2017. Canadian Leonardo Cui had a great day going four strait to win the tournament with 4.0 points. A three-way tie ensued for second place between Ansel Schiffer, Roger Morin, and Brian Hurst each putting up 2.5 points. Here's the illustrated tournament report.

Cui Siblings Win June Houlton Open

Cynthia Cui and her brother Leonardo Cui from New Brunswick, Canada shared equal first at the June Houlton Open played on June 3, 2017 at the Art Gallery in Houlton, Maine. The three-round, G/65 tournament attracted eight players with an average rating of USCF 1751. Here's the tournament report with crosstables.

Chess Tables Installed on Brewer Waterfront

Thanks in part to chess coach, tournament director, and Brewer, Maine resident Steve Wong, two outdoor chess tables have been installed on the Brewer waterfront. The tables are located just southwest of the Wilson Street Bridge along the Penobscot River in a public space known as the Brewer Children's Garden. We reported on this project back in February 2016 and it's wonderful to see that the chess tables are now installed and available to the public.

Maine Maritime Academy to offer Chess as Metaphor Honors Seminar

The Maine Maritime Academy Honors Program Committee has announced the seminar Chess as Metaphor as its offering for the Fall 2017 semester. The class will be co-taught by Paul Wlodkowski, Tom Batt, and Amy Gutow. Spanning the fields of history, mathematics, military strategy, economics, psychology, and international affairs, Chess as Metaphor is an Honors Seminar that is open to novices to the game, as well as experienced players who want to learn the societal context of this amalgam of science, art, and sport.

Jarod Bryan Wins George Cunningham Brilliancy Prize

Established by ChessMaine.net and funded by a generous anonymous donor, the George Cunningham Brilliancy Prize was created to remember and honor one of the most influential figures in Maine chess history and to recognize games played in the state that evoke a certain harmony and aesthetic. The winner of the Prize for the three-month period February - April 2017 is Jarod Bryan for his game vs Sergey Mejia in the final round of the Maine Closed Championship played on April 9th in Waterville. For recognition of Jarod's play in this exciting game, he will receive $100. Congratulations Jarod!

John Bapst Open Tournament Report

Twenty players competed in the John Bapst Open held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. Sergio Mejia topped the Open section with a perfect 4.0 points in four games. Andrew Nevells did the same in the U1400 section. Here's the tournament report and a selected game.

Jarod Bryan Wins 2017 Maine Closed Championship

Jarod Bryan added another Maine State Championship title to his growing list of victories. He has won the tournament a total of eight times including three of the last four. Cruising through his first four games, he drew with Sergio Mejia in the last round to clinch the title. Mejia and Dan Hayes tied for Runner-Up with 4.0 points. In Memory: Authur Bisguier, October 8, 1929 - April 5, 2017

Another chess great has passed. We are saddened to report the death of Arthur Bisquier. Bisguier was U.S. Champion in 1954, three years before earning the title of Grandmaster. He defeated some of the game's greatest players including Bobby Fischer, Boris Spassky, Sammy Reshevsky, Svetozar Gligoric, and Paul Keres. Among his most prominent victories was the 1973 Lone Pine International tournament in California. Our condolences to his family and friends.

Kids Fight Stereotypes Using Chess in Rural Mississippi

Tonight on CBS, 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi reports on how chess is transforming a county in rural Mississippi. Dr. Jeff Burlington, a burley six-foot-six outsider, has come to Franklin County with a belief that the game can transform a community. With a state championship under their belt, 8th place at the Nationals, and a new Chess Center built in the center of town, he may just be right.

2017 State Scholastic Chess Individual Championships Tournament Report

One hundred one scholastic chess players (and eight grown-ups) competed in the State Scholastic Individual Championships (and Sidekick Quads) on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the University of Maine in Orono. Winners in each section were: HS: Ian Youth, HS U1200: Brian Conti and Nehemiah Brown, JHS: Liam Farrell, K-6: Robbie Trowbridge and William Xu, K-3: Jacob Klein.
