FIDE Trainers' Seminar: My Experience

On March 3-5, 2017, the first Internet-based FIDE Trainers' Seminar was held in cooperation with ChessBase. Originating in Hamburg, Germany, the three-day training covered a variety of topics and prepared participants for an exam which, along with other factors, determined the FIDE title they would receive. I took the seminar and will share my experience and impressions in this report.

2017 State Scholastic Chess Team Championships Tournament Report

Far and away Maine's largest chess tournament, the State Scholastic Chess Team Championships played at the University of Maine Orono on Saturday, March 11th, attracted three hundred twenty-seven scholastic chess players from across the state! Players competed in eight sections for state titles in primary, elementary, middle, and high school championship, reserve, and novice divisions. We bring you all the results, from K-12 and A to Z, in this lavishly illustrated tournament report.

Houlton March 2017 Open Tournament Report

While the 2017 State Scholastic Team Chess Championships were taking place in Orono, a six-player Swiss was contested a few hours to the north. On Saturday, March 11, 2017, the March Houlton Open was swept by Roger Morin with a perfect three for three. Tied for second were Canadian scholastic phenom Leonardo Cui and Lance Beloungie with 2.0 points.

China's Tan Zhongyi is Women's World Chess Champion

Twenty-five year old Tan Zhongyi of China has defeated the reigning women's champion Maryia Muzychuk to become the new FIDE Women's World Chess Champion. In a grueling thirty-four game tournament, Zhongyi made it to the finals with Muzychuk and the two players were tied after the four-game regulation match. The first game of the 25 minute +10 second rapid tiebreak was drawn with Muzychuk having the better chances. The second game ended in disaster--and triumph.

All Saints Winter Warm-Up Tournament Report

One of the longest-running tournaments in Maine, the All Saints Winter Warm-Up, attracted sixty-seven players in five sections. The tournament is opportunely timed two weeks before the State Scholastic Team Championships and serves as a final get-the-kinks-out session before that upcoming huge scholastic event. In Memory: Dahlov Ipcar

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of American painter, illustrator, author, Maine resident, and chess player Dahlov Ipcar. Ipcar competed in the National Chess Day 2011 tournament at Bowdoin College at the age of ninety-three. She met her husband, Adolph, when he came to Maine in the summer of 1932. From that first encounter, she remembered this: We spent the summer together, fishing, riding horses -- Adolph rode our big black workhorse -- and exploring the woods and shore. We also played chess on rainy days, though I was a very poor player and he was a good one.

Maine's Newest Chess Club: VFW Post 4298 Dexter

Learning of the many benefits of chess for seniors and veterans, the Commander of the Shirley B. Carter VFW Post 4298 in Dexter, Maine, David Iverson, reached out to ChessMaine.net for support, advice, and technical assistance in establishing a chess club at the Post.
