2017 State Scholastic Chess Team Championships Tournament Report

03.12.17 Far and away Maine's largest chess tournament, the State Scholastic Chess Team Championships played at the University of Maine Orono on Saturday March 11th, attracted three hundred twenty-seven scholastic chess players from across the state! Players competed in eight sections for state titles in primary, elementary, middle, and high school championship, reserve, and novice divisions. We bring you all the results, from K-12 and A to Z, in this lavishly illustrated tournament report.

The 2017 Scholastic Chess Team Championships were played at the University of Maine Orono on Saturday, March 11, 2017.

An incredible outpouring of support and a decided uptick in popularity of scholastic chess in Maine resulted in a near-record-breaking turnout of three hundred twenty-seven players with ages ranging from six to eighteen and including all grades from kindergarten to high school senior. It was an exciting day of chess competition, learning, and growing for all participants. Let's get right down to the results.

Twelve teams competed in the High School Championship section. Orono High School captured their first-ever state title doing so in a fashion that left no doubt of the team's superiority. Orono swept four matches in a row and their players put up an impressive string of victories: Board 1 Joseph Astumian (4.0), Board 2 Ben Amar (4.0), Board 3 Nathan Shemwell (3.5), Board 4 Aaron Wilson-McFarlane (4.0) and Board 5 Greg Dimoulas (3.0). Congratulations on their well-deserved victory.

Co-Runners Up in the High School Championship section were Deer Isle-Stonington High School, who received the second place trophy on US Amateur Team Tiebreaks, and Cheverus High School each scoring 3.0 points.

John Bapst Memorial High School and the Maine School of Science and Mathematics tied for equal fourth place with 2.5 match points apiece.

The remaining teams in order of finish were: Westbrook High School, Brewer High School, Hermon High School, Bangor High School, Medomak Valley High School, Caribou High School and Cape Elizabeth High School.

Cheverus High School dominated the twelve-team High School Reserve section and finished first scoring 10.0 points out of a possible 12.0. Orono High School and Piscataquis Community Secondary School tied for second with 8.0 points. Orono received the second place trophy after a calculation of tiebreaks.

Just out of trophy contention were Washington Academy and Caribou High School who each put up 7.0 points and tied for fourth place.

The remaining High School Reserve teams in order of finish were: Westbrook High School, Belfast Area High School, Van Buren District Secondary School, John Bapst Memorial High School, Medomak Valley High School, Brewer High School, and Deer Isle-Stonington High School.

Caribou High School took first in the High School Novice section with 10.5 points out of a possible 12.0. Central High School in Corinth finished second with 5.5 points.

Orono had another fine showing in the thirteen-team Junior High School section with another impressive victory for Orono Middle School who scored 16.5 points out of a possible 20.0. Top scorers were: Liam Farrell (4.0), Tommy Owen (3.5), Tommaso Wheeler (3.0), Sam Slavin (3.0), Henry Clarke (3.0), and George Pitt (3.0).

Blue Hill Consolidated School finished second in the Junior High School Championship section with 14.5 points. The remaining teams in order of finish were: Deer Isle-Stonington Middle School, Blue Hill Consolidated School Team B, Center Drive School, Cape Elizabeth Middle School, Brewer Community School, Troy Howard Middle School, Bucksport Middle School, Holbrook Middle School, Airline Community School, William S. Cohen School, and Bonney Eagle Middle School.

Reeds Brook Middle School took first in the Junior High School Novice section with an outstanding score of 11.0 out of a possible 12.0 points. The top three scorers for Reeds Brook were: Oliver Bois (4.0), Tate Porter (4.0), and Jessica Dobson (3.0).

Trailing Reeds Brook and receiving the second place trophy in the Junior High School Novice section was Ellsworth Middle School.

Fifty-eight players and twelve teams competed in the K-6 Championship section. When the dust settled it was Cape Elizabeth on top with 17.0 points. Their team consisted of: Zoe Dinnerstein (4.0), Simon Shyka-Brown (4.0), Henry Abrahamsen (3.0), Ben Gordon (3.0), Madeleine Hansen (3.0) and Trevor Oakley (2.0).

In clear second and receiving the Runner Up trophy in the K-6 Championship section was Brewer Community School with 14.5 points.

The remaining teams in order of finish were: All Saints Catholic School, Troy Howard Middle School, Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School, Brewer Community School Team B, Hope Elementary School, Captain Albert Stevens School, Fort O'Brien School, Airline Community School, Lincolnville Central School, and Piscataquis Community Elementary School.

Cape Elizabeth took first in the K-6 Novice section with 10.0 points.

Very close on their heels was Ellsworth Elementary School who scored 9.5 points.

There were nine teams in the K-3 Championship section. Lincolnville Central School put up 9.0 points to take first place. Their team consisted of Liana Talty (3.0), Awnin Oxley (3.0), Zachary Egeland (3.0), Thomas Pickford (3.0), Ward Morrison (3.0), Adalaide Harbaugh (2.0), Bryson Hise (1.5), and Noah Seliger (0.5).

A two-way tie for second place ensued in the K-3 Championship section between Abraham Lincoln School (who received the second place trophy on tiebreaks) and Brewer Community School Team B.

The remaining teams in the K-3 championship section in order of finish were: Brewer Community School Team A, Fort O'Brien School, Hope Elementary School, Piscataquis Elementary School (who received the first place K-3 Novice section trophy) and Great Falls School.
