Introducing the Chess in Maine Schools Initiative

ChessMaine.net is pleased to announce the Chess in Maine Schools Initiative. We all know that chess teaches creative problem solving fosters concentration, critical thinking, and positive self-esteem. We have seen firsthand the overwhemingly positive effects of scholastic chess programs on Maine's children particularly in rural and underserved areas. Now we are leveraging these insights to bring chess programs to eligible K-12 schools in Maine. Our first step has been the creation of a GoFundMe page. We hope you will consider contributing to Chess in Maine Schools.

Fort O'Brien Tournament Report

Sandwiched between two major snow storms and smack dab in the middle of a minor one, the Fort O'Brien Chess Tournament, held in Machiasport, Maine on Saturday, February 11th, 2017, attracted twenty-three brave and resilient chess competitors. Robert Bridgham Wins George Cunningham Brilliancy Prize

Established by ChessMaine.net and funded by a generous anonymous donor, the George Cunningham Brilliancy Prize was created to remember and honor one of the most influential figures in Maine chess history and to recognize games played in the state that evoke a certain harmony and aesthetic. The winner of the Prize for the three-month period November 2016 - January 2017 is Robert Bridgham for his game vs Roger Morin at the IM Danny Kopec UMaine Memorial Tournament played on November 19th in Orono. For recognition of Robert's play in this exciting game, he will receive $100. Congratulations Robert!

Third Ellsworth K-8 Chess Afternoon

The third and final Ellsworth K-8 Chess Afternoon of the 2016-17 season was held at the Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Despite many schools canceling or delaying classes because of snow, chess players turned out in good numbers to gain experience and sharpen their skills before the upcoming state scholastic championships to be held at the University of Maine in Orono on Saturday, March 11th.

Happy Birthday Boris Spassky

January 29, 2017

Boris Vasilievich Spassky celebrates his 80th birthday today. He was born in Leningrad on January 29, 1937 and is the oldest living former World Champion. Known for his universal style, Spassky seemed to always be solid and unshakable but battled self doubt throughout his career. He said of himself, "I believe in truth at the chessboard, but down deep I lack faith in myself." His stellar chess achievements highlight the axiom that the actions of confidence precede the feelings of confidence. Happy Birthday Boris Vasilievich!

USCF-Rated Chess is back in Washington County! Come Play on 2/11/17!

It's been over eight years since a USCF-rated tournament has been held in Washington County, Maine. The last was the St. Croix Valley International on August 16, 2008. That long dry spell is about to end. ChessMaine.net has teamed up with Fort O'Brien School in Machiasport to organize a five-section rated tournament with the same format as the very successful Aurora Winter Solstice tournaments (now entering their thirteenth year).

18th Annual MLK Jr. Day Chess Tournament Report

January 19, 2017

The folks at Stillwater Montessori School continue to host this great annual event now in its 18th year! Kudos to organizer Joe Alex and his staff and director Steve Wong for their dedication, endurance, and commitment to serving the chess players of Maine. Fifty-one players turned up for this four-section (one of which was non-rated) tournament. In the Open, Bill Hartt and Joseph Astumian finished equal first with 3.0 points. Vetri Vel was alone at the top of the K-12 section with 3.5 points. In the K-8 section. Sam Slavin and Tommaso Wheeler shared first and Sarah Means won the non-rated K-6 section.

Hermon High School Tops Second Meeting of BAHSSCL

January 17, 2017

The second meeting of the Bangor Area High School Scholastic Chess League on Friday, January 13, 2017 at John Bapst Memorial High School saw participation increase by 50%! This newly formed league offers the opportunity for high school players in the area to participate in interscholastic chess competition, leading up to the state team and individual tournaments at the University of Maine Orono in March.

John Bapst New Year's Tournament in Memory of Bob Solinger Report

The John Bapst New Year's Tournament in Memory of Bob Solinger was played on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. The four-section tournament attracted forty-one players. Winners were: Tom Sandford (Open), Benjamin Mock (U1200), Jakob McPhee (U800), and Sol Tyler (U400). Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School Hosts K-8 Chess Meet

January 10, 2017

Scholastic chess players from Fort O'Brien School in Machiasport, Stillwater Montessori School in Orono, Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School, Bucksport Middle School, Lamoine Consolidated School and the hosting Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School met for an afternoon of chess and fun on Tuesday, January 10, 2017. These non-rated events are great primers for players gearing up for the State Scholastic Chess Championships in March. Thanks to all the players, organizers, coaches, parents, drivers, and volunteers for making this a very positive learning experience!
