The Maine Chess Association joined with eleven chess associations, federations, and Russian organizations to commemorate the 84th birthday of the 10th World Chess Champion Boris Spassky with an official proclamation. Just after the proclamation was delivered we received a letter of greetings in return signed by the World Champion himself. |

Today is Boris Spassky's 84th birthday. To commemorate and celebrate this auspicious day the Maine-based chess club Batani will play a match vs the Tromso, Norway Sjakklubb at noon eastern on Sunday, January 31, 2021. You can watch the match on the Batani Club Page on lichess.org. We wish the 10th World Chess Champion the best of health and happiness! |

There was a flurry of close, nail-biting action on Thursday and Friday, January 21-22, 2021 as the matches in the second week of the Maine Online High School Chess League concluded. A new sixth team, Hampden Academy, entered the scene, matching up against Morse High School for their Maine chess debut. |

The first week of the inaugural Maine Online High School Chess League has wrapped up! Five teams from across the state are currently in the mix for this online league held on chess.com: Cape Elizabeth High School, Bonny Eagle High School, John Bapst Memorial High School, Deer Isle-Stonington High School, and Morse High School. These teams will square off for up to seven weeks of competition. |

The Adult Education program in Old Orchard Beach/Saco is looking for a chess instructor to teach an online chess class. The semester begins in April but the catalog goes out at the end of January so time is short. The Maine Chess Association, together with the donations of two anonymous donors, has reinstated the George Cunningham Brilliancy Prizes for 2021 and 2022! The George Cunningham Brilliancy Prizes are meant to reward games from Maine Chess Association members that are aesthetically pleasing, brilliant, interesting, and instructional. |
