Election of the Maine Chess Association Policy Board officers and directors will be held beginning Saturday, December 3, 2011 through Sunday, December 11, 2011. All members who have currently active membership in MECA are eligible to vote and hold office. There are candidates for the officer positions of Treasurer and Secretary, and two candidates for Director positions.

There was a little five-player tournament back in June, 2011 that seems to have slipped through the cracks. Well we are happy to report that we are now making good on reporting this event albeit a bit late. Here's photos, a crosstable and a selected game from the June 2011 Presque Isle Open.

The Ninth Presque Isle Open was played at the newly-renovated Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library on November 12th, 2011. The two-section nine-player tournament was won by two-time Maine State Champion Roger Morin with 3.0 points. In the Under 1200 section, Matt Norris and Tim Walker tied for first with 3.5 points in four rounds. Here's an illustrated tournament report with USCF crosstables and a selected game.

The Maine Association of Chess Coaches has announced the dates for the Scholastic State Championship Tournaments to take place at the Universtiy of Maine in Orono: Girls Championship February 11, 2012; Team Championship March 3, 2012; Snow Date for Team Championship March 10, 2012; Individual Championship March 17, 2012. More information including registration materials will be posted when available on the ChessMaine.net events page.

It's a one-of-a-kind event that has been taking place for the past nineteen years. It's an overnight of chess--in all its forms--to raise money for scholastic chess players and their teams. It's the Nineteenth Annual Lacy Greenlaw Deer Isle-Stonington Chess-a-thon and it took place on November 10th-11th at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School. Here's a look at some of the fun that was had.

"A wonderful little tournament" is how one player described the eight-player Creative Arts Tournament played on October 8th, 2011 in Brewer, Maine. Steve Abrahams topped the crosstable with a perfect 4.0 points in as many rounds. Roger Morin took second with 3.0 points. Here are photos and the USCF crosstable of the event.
