The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Matthew Fishbein and Phil Lowell had an opportunity to play each other in a USCF-rated game at the Cheverus High School Quad tournament in Portland on December 13, 2014. This was the first encounter between these two players that resulted in a win for the apprentice--USCF-rated 2164 Matthew Fishbein. We bring you the game with annotations by Phil Lowell.

Lance Beloungie is 2014 Maine Chess Player of the Year!

Congratulations to Lance Beloungie who has won the year-long 2014 Maine Chess Player of the Year competition. Beloungie played in seven player of the year tournaments and amassed 43.8 points to take clear first ahead of his nearest rival Roger Morin with 42.4 points. Class prizes were also awarded: Curt Brock finished third overall and won the Class B prize, Darrell Butler won Class C and Joseph Powell took Class D.

Fishbein Tops Cheverus Quads

Cheverus High School in Portland hosted a quad tournament on Saturday, December 13th. Twelve players took part in three rated quads and five players participated in a non-rated quint. Cape Elizabeth High School student Matthew Fishbein scored a perfect 3.0 points in three games to take first in Quad 1. Bruce Sherwood scored 2.5 points in Quad 2 for the top spot there and Ben Peterson blanked his opponents to win Quad 3.

10th Annual Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament Report

In its tenth year, the Aurora Winter Solstice Tournament broke an attendance record with forty-eight players competing in four USCF-rated sections---Open, U1400, U800 and U400. Edward Nevells (1765) tied for first with Aaron Spencer (2156) and Jarod Bryan (2216) in a fourteen-player field that contained four players rated over 2000. Tony Freudig won the U1400 section with 3.0 points in three games, and Gregg Wadsworth took top U1200 honors in that section. Cam Stewart won clear first in the U800 section with an unbeaten and untied performance. In the U400 section, there was a logjam at the top with four players posting 3.0 points: Ian Pomroy, Ben McIntire, Kai Diel, and Natalie Sheehan.

Paul Wlodkowski Heads Back to Russia

Ellsworth Chess Club member and Maine Maritime Academy Engineering Professor Paul Wlodkowski will be heading to Russia this spring to conduct research and teach engineering courses at Admiral Mararov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping in St. Petersburg, Russia. Reporter Charles Eichacker caught up with Professor Wlodkowski and filed this report with the Ellsworth American.

WCC 2014 G11: Carlsen Wins Game and Retains Title

In a dramatic finale, the World Chess Championship Match has ended with a win for the current champion Magnus Carlsen. Anand, playing the black pieces, did what he had to do in this game; he saw chances and tried to take advantage of them. He was better at move 23 then, perhaps overestimating his position or pressing too hard, he sacrificed the exchange for insufficient compensation. After that turn of events Carlsen, with a few deft touches, secured the point, match and title.
