Jarod Bryan Wins his Seventh Maine Championship

Jarod Bryan went unbeaten and untied to score a perfect 5.0 points in five games to take the Maine Champion title for the seventh time. Twenty-eight players competed in this year's Maine Championship on April 18-19, in Waterville. William Ravn (Class A winner) and Sergi Mejia tied for second place with 4.0 points apiece. John Brady won the Class B prize, Nathan Gates took the Class C prize, and Frank Collemer, Andy Bryan, and Joe Powell tied for the Class D prize.

Steve Abrahams Making Waves in Scholastic Chess

Former Maine tournament player, chess coach, and tournament director Steve Abrahams has been coaching at Franklin Academy in Florida and working as a chess instructor for ChessKid.com. Steve wrote an article that appears in this month's Chess Life magazine (April 2015, page 10). Kudos to Steve for sharing his skill and passion for the game with scholastic players.

Portsmouth, NH Dad Gives Gift of Chess

Thumbs up to Ted Alex and the Portsmouth Rotary Club for its ninth annual Jeremy Alex Fund chess sets donation, made this week to Greenland Central School fourth-graders. Jeremy Alex died about a decade ago while battling drug addiction. Ted Alex believes chess teaches good decision making and the club donates the sets to kids who are at the right age to learn. "If you make good decisions, you'll have good results, and if you make bad decisions you'll have bad results, just like in life," Hebert told the fourth-graders. "We want to get you on the path of making good decisions."

Nakamura Wins U.S. Championship

Hikaru Nakamura beat Alexander Onischuk in the final round of the U.S. Championship today to clinch the title for the forth time in his career. Nakamura was clearly happy and relieved that the tournament went well for him but said in a interview immediately following the game that he is already focused on the upcoming FIDE World Cup event that could qualify him for a spot in the world championship candidates matches.

2015 U.S. Chess Championship Underway in St. Louis

The top twelve players in the country, including U.S. number 1 (and current World number 2) GM Hikaru Nakamura and U.S. number 2 GM Wesley So, are competing in the U.S. Chess Championship St. Louis. After five rounds Nakamura leads with 4.0 and So is trailing close behind with 3.5. The official site has amazing live coverage every day beginning at 2:00 p.m. on the east coast.

Mariya Muzychuk of Ukraine Becomes the 15th Women's World Chess Champion

Mariya Muzychuk drew her fourth game with Natalia Pogonina to win the Women's World Chess Championship by a score of 2.5-1.5. Pogonina needed a win to send the match to the tiebreaks but couldn't manage to create a decisive advantage and had to settle for a draw. Congratulations to Mariya Muzychuk the 15th Woman's World Chess Champion!

Women's World Championship in Final Four

The Women's World Championship is underway in Sochi, Russia. The sixty-four player tournament has been culled to just four players. The top seeds have been eliminated as have the two American players Tatev Abrahamyan and Irina Krush. The four remaining players are: Pia Cramling (Sweeden), Natalija Pogonina (Russia), Dronavalli Harika (India), and Mariya Muzychuk (Ukraine).

State Scholastic Individual Championships Tournament Report

This year's Maine State Scholastic Individual Chess Championships were played at the University of Maine Orono on Saturday, March 21st. State Champion titles were awarded in five categories: High School, High School U1200, Junior High School, K-6 and K-3. Saco Open Tournament Report

March 18, 2015

Twenty-eight players participated in the 2015 Saco Open played over the weekend of March 14-15 at the Hampton Inn in Saco, Maine. Two strong fields assembled in two sections: Open and U1750. GM Alexander Ivanov and IM David Vigorito shared the top spot in the Open with 3.5 points apiece--drawing with each other in round three. In the U1750 section, Dale Barkey and Mark Seedner posted an unbeaten 3.0 points to finish equal first. Here's the illustrated tournament report with USCF crossables.
