The fourteenth edition of the Bapst Impromptu Swiss Tournament took place at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor on Thursday, December 22, 2018. The three-round, G/25, d5 tournament attracted eleven players. Wyatt Hendrix took clear first with an unbeaten and untied 3.0 points. The inaugural edition of the Nutcracker Blitz tournament, hosted by the Bonny Eagle Chess Club, was held on Saturday, December 15th at Snickerdoodle's Café in Limington, Maine and attracted XX players. The event featured two sections and seven rounds of Game-in-5-minute chess with no delay. Results of the 2018 Maine Chess Associations Election are in. All eight positions were filled and Board member-elects are slated to serve MECA for two-year terms ending in December 2020. Wyatt Hendrix turned in an impressive performance by leveling the competition at the Friday Night Blitz tournament in Bangor with ten wins without a single loss or draw. Six players competed in the Game in 5 minute event with no delay or increment hosted by John Bapst Memorial High School on Friday, December 7, 2018. Ben Mock was two points off the break-neck pace of the winner scoring 8.0 points. |

Fifty-nine players competed in five sections at the 14th Annual Aurora Winter Solstice tournament held on Saturday, December 8th at the Airline Community School in Aurora. The winners were: Nathan Gates (Open), Tristan Cousineau (U1600), Ben Penfold (U1200), Kenneth Park (U800), and Jacob Van de Sande (U400). Matthew Fishbein has had a great year of chess in 2018. After winning the State Championship in April, Fishbein's US Chess rating has continued to steadily rise and has now reached a career-high 2308. As far as we know, this establishes him as the second-highest rated native Mainer just behind Jarod Bryan's career high of 2343 and ahead of Stanley Elowitch's 2300. |

Former United States Chess Federation president and native Mainer Ruth Haring died on November 29th at the age of 63. Haring was a Women's International Master, the current FIDE Zonal President for the United States, and was on Nigel Short's FIDE presidential ticket for the office of General Secretary. Although Short's ticket did not win, Haring was elected to the FIDE ethics committee. We extend our condolences to Ruth Haring's family and friends. |
