Eight-time Maine State Chess Champion Jarod Bryan added another title to his impressive resume. Bryan won the 2019 Maine State Blitz Championship played on Saturday, January 26th at Hermon High School in Hermon Maine. Players found there way through a mind-numbing crucible of sixteen games at the blitz time control of G/3+2. A paper was published in Volume 30 of the Asian Journal of Psychiatry that studied the effect of playing chess on treating a panic attack. Although this research is still in its infancy, the conclusion of this particular study was that chess therapy with the right level of difficulty can be recommended as a very effective non-pharmaceutical method for the successful treatment of panic attacks. |

The first Maine State Blitz Championship will be held this Saturday, January 26th at Hermon High School in Hermon, Maine. The tournament format is an eight-round double Swiss--each player will play two G/3, +2 games against eight different opponents for a total of sixteen games. A winter storm warning remains in effect from 9:00 p.m. Saturday, January 19th - 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 21st. Heavy snow and mixed precipitation accumulating from 12 to 20 inches with winds gusting to 35 m.p.h. are expected accross the state. Roger Morin ran the table at the January 2019 Houlton Open played on Saturday, January 12th at the Art Studio in Houlton, Maine. Eight players, braving sub-zero wind chill temperatures, traveled to Aroostook County to participate in this event. A whopping eighty-one players turned out for Maine's first US Chess rated tournament of 2019. The Bob Solinger Memorial Tournament held at John Bapst High School on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 offered five sections: Open, U1600, U1200, U800, and U400. This tournament attracted a near-record number of participants in a non-state scholastic championship tournament. The record of 104 players is still held by the 2000 St. Mary's Winter Warm-Up.
