The Maine Association of Chess Coaches (the organization that hosts the annual Maine State Scholastic Chess Championships) leads the USCF Membership Appreciation Program's Small State Affiliate Standings with 152 new and renewing USCF memberships thus far in 2010. On the same list, the Airline Community School in Aurora is currently in sixth place having secured 24 new and renewing USCF memberships. |

In a dramatic playoff game at the U.S. Chess Championship played at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis, Gata Kamsky held Yuri Shulman to a draw and thus won the title of U.S. Chess Champion. Both players bid on their preferred time for the final tiebreaking game. The lowest bidder received choice of color and draw odds. Kamsky bid 25 minutes to his opponent's 60, took black, draw odds and the title. |

Massachusetts GM Alexander Ivanov didn't need to play the last round of the Eastern Maine Championship held at Hollywood Slots Casino in Bangor, May 15-16, 2010. Ivanov scored 4.0 points in the first four rounds and that was enough to put him out of reach of the rest of the field. |

Viswanathan Anand outscored Veselin Topalov 6.5 to 5.5 in the twelve-round FIDE World Chess Championship tournament played in Sofia, Bulgaria from April 23 - May 10, 2010. Tied after eleven games, Anand playing the black pieces, employed Lasker's Defense to the Queen's Gambit Declined and pulled off a pretty victory. |

| Another National Elementary Championship is in the history books. The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners took home three trophies: 14th Place in the K-6 U1000 Teams, 15th Place in the K-6 Unrated Teams and Krisford Melanio, Maine's highest scoring player, received a 25th place individual trophy in the K-6 U1000 section. | |

| Five rounds have been completed at the 2010 Elementary National Chess Championships being held at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta. There have been many hard-fought battles with mixed results for Maine players. After four rounds, Deer Isle - Stonington held on to 19th place in the K-6 U1000 section and should improve their position in the crosstable based on good results in Round 5. | |

Over two thousand of the strongest K-6 players from across the nation are competing for national titles in twelve sections. Maine has fielded eleven players in this seven-round, three day event. | |
